What does a dispute about a centralized government have to do with what we were talking about? The US civil war was not about that.

Of course the US civil war was about that. About other things too, but some states wanted out of the union.

And I was on about the US civil war, not necessarily Ukraine. Thought it would be easier for you to comprehend.

So, let’s take Ukraine instead. Parts of the country are in Russian hands, many citizens have fled abroad, cities are under constant attack, etc.
How do you hold a fair and free election in those circumstances?

No it was not. It was about not letting the south secede. Both the north and the south had centralized governments. So that was not an issue at all. It was about not letting the southern states form their own government.
