If you like comic book/fantasy type films lifted from "graphic novels", it's incredible.

I saw 300 last night and thought it was pretty good, not great, but a good historical action movie.

Wait, is that the movie that depicts the persian empire, possibly
the greatest human civilisation in ancient times, as consistent of
war mongering, filthy barbarians?

Yeah, great movie. 🙄

From the reviews I've read so far, I'm guessing this is yet another movie
with too much visuals, excessive sound effects, and absolutely no substance
what so ever.

I simply must see it now.

Let's take a ridiculous view of a civilisation, turn it around, push it to the opposite ridiculous extreme and then put on a straight face.

That said, 300 is not supposed to be factual. It's only a historically inspired graphic novel and doesn't intend to portray reality in any way. This, by itself, does not reduce any of its artistic value.

Its a pity they didn't stick more closely to Gates of Fire. Who needs monsters and freaks, when the base material is that good?

I haven't actually seen the movie, though.

It depends. Would Homer's Iliad and Odyssey be better without myth and deities? Would Hamlet be better without the ghost? They would simply be different (for better or worse). I think it's important to at least accept the premise of a work (extreme cases excluded) to fairly be able to judge it.

Oh I don't think I turned it to the opposite extreme. From all I can tell
the persian empire really was extraordinary for its time, but I suppose
the film doesn't have to be historically ac...

No, wait. It's truly ridiculous when it's so far off. If it's not supposed to be
even close to historically accurate, why choose the persian empire and
the greeks in the first place? Why not just make something up? Then
you can watch it without being constantly reminded how wrong it is and
possibly enjoy it for visuals or whatever.

I think it does take a lot from the artistic value of it, as it distracts you
from the actual film (if there's even anything to be distracted from, to be
honest).

All empires were relatively extraordinary for their time. The Persian Empire is no exception, I fail to see how from its particular traits you decide to say it was possibly the greatest human civilisation in ancient times.

I don't understand your problem. 'Historically inspired' is reason enough for including the Spartans and the Persians. Even the Spartans portrayed are caricatural. I think Frank Miller's portrayal of the Persians is obviously not an attack on race or culture, but could (for xample, I don't speak for Frank Miller or Zack Snyder) even be a portrayal of the feeling of demonization of everything that constitutes the enemy in a war and the overtly nationalistic sentiments that prevail at that time.

It seems to me much more a reflection of the Spartan self-imagery and their strive for physical perfection than any form of racist propaganda as so many political correct critics have claimed.

Why was the Persian empire so extraordinary for it's time? Well, let's just
say that Cyrus' idea of human rights (Cyrus cylinder) was way ahead of
it's time, even compared to the bogus democracy taught by the Geeks
(pun intended).

I simply don't like it when you take historical figures and civilisations and
portray them inaccurately, whatever the reason to do so. Sure, the
Greeks demonised the Persians as you would your enemies if you know
you're not right to begin with, but then it should be clear in the movie
that that's what it's all about. The film (as I understand it) actually
portray the Persians as barbarians. That's about as inaccurate as you can
get.

In short, the whole story becomes rubbish because of that fact. It's like
if you make a movie where a bunch of Nazis play a leading role in WW2
Germany and the Jews are portrayed as uncivilised and unpredictable
enemies to be stopped at all cost. I'm sure you would react then, uh?

Edits? Spelling and grammar corrections. I'm trying to improve in
that field. (this field?) (that field?) I'm obviously not improving. 😞

Guys.....it's just a live action cartoon-like movie, like Conan The Barbarian, etc. No claim was made that it's historically accurate. Why whine about it? It's an adult fantasy/action film, just relax and enjoy it.

But unlike Conan the barbarian, this one uses characters from real history.
Call me nerdy, but that irritates me. You enjoy the film. I'll pass. 🙂
