He died because the concussion of two 500 lb bombs turned his insides into jelly. I'm pretty sure they would have liked to have gotten him alive so the Jordanian interrogators could have questioned him. Unlike the US, Jordan wouldn't care what the Euros would have to say concerning their interrogation techniques.
