When the clubs get up and running hopefully they will become a place to pick out opponents that you are comfortable playing with... If not.. you will not have to wait months for a review.. the problem can be taken care of immediately.
edit- I almost forgot Club 9

As I understand it (and I may not understand it at all, so please feel free to point out how wrong I am), one can join as many clubs as they want so long as the corresponding administrators accept them.
Once joining a club, it will NOT, in any way, effect the RHP experience as it currently sits. One will not have extra games - unless they volunteer for them. One can still post in the regular forums if they desire.
Rather, there will be some additional actions that club members can perform that outsiders cannot.
Games/Statistics
Each club member will have an independent rating for each club they belong and each club member will have a graph for their performance against other players in the club. I believe, but am not certain, that this graph will be contained within the club and not on the home of each member.
Since joining a club will NOT increase the number of games that any player is involved, the members will have to voluntarily play one another within the clubs that they belong to have these statistics recorded (I am assuming that any past games will not be recorded and I am pretty sure that I am correct in my assumption).
Club Tournaments
It appears that there will be tournaments amongst the members of the clubs. I believe that such tournaments will be voluntary.
Club Forums
Additionally, club members will have access to private forums for each club.
As I see it, these are the potential benefits for joining a club. If they do not interest anyone, don't join.
If I am incorrect in my synopsis, please correct me.

I've started to be afraid that my natural aversion to being lumped in with social groups would tag me as an engine user.

In case anyone missed it, that was a joke. I'm sure the punchline is obvious.
