Yesterday I was asked if I am intentionally growing a beard. Ever since it became in issue, I've been the shave-every-couple-of-days-never-have-noticeable-facial-hair sort of person. However, it occurred to me, upon being asked this question, that I've not bothered to shave for a week or so, and the scruffy beginnings of beard-to-be are making themselves known. I don't have a camera, but it's at the sort of point of opportunity, where I have realised that for the first time, full facial hair is an option.
Now, some are of the school of thought that everyone who can should grow a beard at least once; a friend of mine first came to terms with his beard-ability during the 2004 US Presidential election; this gave rise to the Beards to Beat Bush PAC. Others frown on or encourage facial hair for reasons ranging from Ted Kaczynski, Charles Manson and Blackbeard to Santa Claus, Jerry Garcia and bbarr, respectively. I, however, like to think of myself as being governed by some higher, universal aesthetic more than by the petty prejudices of my associates. That said, even casual familiarity with my taste in dress and home decor reveals that I know absolutely [doodoo] all about this aesthetic which I have chosen as my master.
I have some data: the many grizzled veterans of fuzz facadery with whom it has been my pleasure to speak of such things all agree that this universal aesthetic applies itself to beards through simple criteria relating to facial shape, hair colour versus beard colour, type of beard intended, etc. Thus I call upon the brave bearded brothers of the general forum, and anyone else with taste, to help me decide whether to boldly grow or to end this hirsute heresy. For reference, a link to a recent picture of a shaven me:

I eagerly await your sage advice. Let the hairsplitting commence!
I agree that everyone who can should try it at least once. I knew a woman therapist who claimed that men grew beards to hide their faces in some quest to be devious and secretive or some such poppycock. I thought of that when I read one of the comments in the T1000 thread by the woman who marked people off for having a beard. I say don't trust the opinion of someone who can't grow one -- it could be beard envy 😉
After having grown a beard a number of times and then eventually shaving it off over a period of about 5 years, I grew one again in 1981 and have kept it ever since. Now after living with it for 26 years, I can't imagine ever shaving it off. Back then, it was black but now it's grey! 🙂
However, I keep it neat and trimed and I do shave the neck area. So it requires just as much work as the days when I shaved clean every day. I don't think scruffy beards look good at all. You can't get away from this issue of whiskers at all. It's the curse of being a man.

I would recommend that you spend les time on the internet and more time eating. Seriously, I wouldn't recommend overcompensating as I obviously have, but, I've taken dumps that look more substantial than you do.
Originally posted by ChronicLeakyTo bring it all together - art, beard and hairsplitting - here's my suggestion: Grow a beard and practise tetrapyloctomy, the art of splitting hairs four ways, on it! You could achieve different effects by tetrapyloctomising all hairs or only a selection (for example all hairs on one side), or by tetrapyloctomising the hairs on the whole length or just at the tip.

I'm feeling a fair amount of love for the beard in this thread. I'm a little confused about a few things, though:
Reinfeld: At least my stupid general forum posts don't depend explicitly on the idle posts of General Forum Idiots, because T1000 was a General Forum Badass.
T-Chex: Is it acceptable to grow a beard to keep people away even if I live in a pretty relaxed, chill city and the people to be scared away are not crazy or threatening?
HoH: Is that a "Yes, grow a beard, but put on some weight first" or a categorical "No, you'll look like a gay pirate anyway"? Did Benny Hinn help you take the aforementioned dumps? If so, in how strong a sense may I claim to be Hinn's creation?
Noodles: Is there a more general art of splitting hairs into as many parts as one likes, or is there some weird reason involving polypeptide chains or something that means four is as good as it gets (and if there is, I bet some symmetry is at work to make three also impossible)? Are there hair-colour differences? Tell me more, in as much detail as possible without splitting hairs.
Attila: I like that you've gotten into the spirit of this thread, which is all about neophytes seeking sagely wisdom. If I let it grow, am I giving into the curse or just gaining a Zen-like awareness of the curse as part of the inevitable fabric of the cosmos 😉?
YOu gotta make up yo mind what you want to do on the damn top of yo head. It's like you can't make up your mind. I think a beard might fill your face out a little. But then again, some damn food wouldn't hurt either. I've had my beard for 25 years and I like the low maintainance of just buzzing it down short about once a week.
Originally posted by ChronicLeakyBeard first, because it sure as hell can't hurt the bus crash you call a face. Secondly, put on some weight and grow into those ears of yours.
