I respect the hell out of those nuts who play Rugby. That's not footie.

I told this before here at RHP... some Rugby player had a lump in his leg. He finally decided to have it checked out. It was someone's tooth! That's nuts.

NFL is great, don't let the pads fool you. Pads allow you to take a greater risk. This game doesn't start in a scrum... they line up and plow into each other... next some start running down the field to catch the ball. Some guy is waiting to pound the daylights out of you when you so much as touch the ball.

Some players 'give up' on a play when they should not. If the ball is still in play someone can lay a shot on you from the side or front, and even the back sometimes. Play til the whistle blows, or feel the blows.

I didn't miss that. I have nothing against rugby. I enjoyed that video. I thought you might enjoy seeing what we get here as well.

Yeah, I agree. The main difference is with the equipment, you essentially turn yourself into a human missile. It's devastating, and the clash of helmets makes for great sounds on NFL films.

Um, in general, neither does rugby.

A rugby game starts with a kickoff, whereby 1 guy kicks the ball high in the air, to give his team mates time to get near enough to the catcher to leather into him as soon as his feet touch the ground.

Scrums are just 1 way of restarting a rugby game after a stoppage. This is when rugby players bite each others ears off and growl at each other.

In rugby, you can't spear an opponent (turn him upside down and dump him on his head), you can't late tackle an opponent (ie: hit him after he has released the ball), you can't tackle with a swinging arm, and you can't tackle above shoulder height.

Near 1:30 or so is Boston's Pedro Martinez. He plonked that guy, and watch as he walks in toward the batter. This is his invitation to even try to charge him. When Pete hit a batter, he would always stare them down as if to say, "Dat's what you get.".

A great quote of his is talking about Babe Ruth and the Yankees. "Babe Ruth? Someone wake the damn Bambino up, and I'll drill him in the ass".

The next clip is a batter from my local double A team who delivers a Jackie Chan to the catcher so he can charge the mound.

To be fair to those NFL boys, that's the reason for the protective gear. What little NFL I've seen - those boys only tackle illegally, rugby-wise. Especially those spear tackles. Ouch.

Um, no... it's legal in NFL. (for the most part, they frown on
'helmet to helmet' and 'horse collars'... as well as some other
stuff like chopping.)
