For best solo sport - are we talking to play or to watch? To watch, I'd probably say tennis.

I prefer golf, but Tennis is a good choice also. (The original poster suggested rock climbing.)

One of the categories was "best bat." 🙄

A lot of things can be referred to by two names. Do you tell everybody who refers to a "sarnie", "No, you are wrong. It's actually a sandwich. I know perfectly well what you are referring to, but here is a link to the history of the sandwich, and where the name came from."

Everybody in the world knows what sport you are referring to when you say soccer. By using Football, you could be referring to American football, Ozzie Rules, Gaelic Football, Rugby League or Rugby Union.

Seriously, why do the English have such a problem with this particular colloquialism?
