I will be traveling solo for about three out of six weeks. Any advice on where to stay and sights that should not be missed would be very appreciated.

I quietly celebrated mine (December 23rd) in Malta.
Took a shower and went to old English snack breakfast at Chat'n chew shop owned by British ladies marooned there after Malta got independent.
Took a bus to go kart lanes. Had several rides.
Evening: after dinner (rabbit stew and stewed mussels), went to Italian circus show.
After that went to a pub to watch Italian derby Milan - Inter over pint of guiness beer.
