I see Russ has installed a rating system (beta) for the blitz games. YEA!!!
But it also says that if you have a firewall you need to give a certain port number access to macro media's flash program. Well, I have a hardware router which closes all ports until I open them. Does this mean that I will have to remove the hardware firewall to play blitz?
I don't think I can program it to leave a certain port open, but maybe that's possible.

I can't seem to play anymore. 🙁

those usually have a web interface you can use from your browser. just type its ip on the address bar and you'll probably get a login screen. the ip is brand specific, as is the password unless you've changed it. you can reset the password to factory default from a reset button somewhere on the router if need be.
anyway, you can configure the router through the browser interface. just find the firewall settings, and see if you can figure out how the thing works on your specific router.

Ok, some suggestions are needed now I believe.
1. Ratings (obviously)
2. Ability to Kibitz (ie, watch other people play)
3. Ability to offer rematch after the game is finished (choosing colour also)
3. Some sort of chat feature at the bottom of the main lobby would be nice. (This would allow people to organise informal tournaments, though i realise ...[text shortened]... bably need moderating...)
Anyone else got a wish list? (Russ is gonna love me for this!!) 😛

Originally posted by ArrakisIf you go to the Linksys interface, you should have options for "port forwarding" or "custom services" or something like that, it could be under advanced options or similar. 1) create a new type of traffic (a service) named rhpblitz (or whatever) with the needed port (range?). just allow both TCP and UDP if you don't know which one you need.
2) create a rule for the router's firewall to forward that rhpblitz traffic from WAN to LAN, or if need be, to a specific internal ip within your LAN. that is, forward the rhpblitz traffic into the computer you play from.
that should do it.
Russ I like it BUT:
I have had it crash on me a few times now. 2 out of 10 games approx. In the middle of the game. Nothing obviously similar about the game situation.
Using: IE7 + Flash 9 on XP Pro.
Note: Uchess never crashed on me. Sometimes it would fail to load the room. But never crashed so that it closed out the browser like the new Blitz site has twice now.
Originally posted by tmetzlerNo good reason for this. It is the same code as uChess with minor branding changes.

Originally posted by RussI had a similar thing happen on Uchess a while ago. Sometimes i couldn't log in. I tried clearing cache etc but it still only worked sporadically. I haven't had any problems with the RHP version yet. I've used it quite a bit too... 🙂

Originally posted by wormwoodI didn't want to get too far into it, since a lot of the manufacturers give things their own fancy name. It also soundd like Arrakis was being very security conscious, so I didn't want to advise opening the port for both protocols... but, yeah - that's what I was saying. Usually they list it as a range, but you can set the trigger port, as well as the start and end ports in the range (on most routers I've met) as the same port.
so, in a nut shell:
1) create a new type of traffic (a service) named rhpblitz (or whatever) with the needed port (range?). just allow both TCP and UDP if you don't know which one you need.
2) create a rule for the router's firewall to forward that rhpblitz traffic from WAN to LAN, or if need be, to a specific internal ip within your LAN. that is, forward the rhpblitz traffic into the computer you play from.

Originally posted by RussI had something odd happen yesterday (I can play again). I was ahead on time in one of my games and my opponent just quit moving. I sat and watched his flag count down to 0:00, but then the screen wouldn't continue. I waited and waited but the time was not called and the screen wouldn't change. Odd thing, I thought, if I hit 'exit' then I lose this.

Had to eventually hit exit anyways though to get out of it. When I did my opponent had also exited (probably before me).
Originally posted by RussYes. I think this is what Reader was saying earlier - where you watch your opponent timeout because they've disconnected, but no one gets the win. It's happened twice to me now. Once where my laptop crapped out because the battery died, and once where my opponent disappeared and I didn't get the win.

Edit - and what Arrakis just said. Apparently if you're going to lose, just quit and no one wins.
