Many thanks, I've put both on my favourites.

I read most these articles in the press. Although the stamp duty article I had missed. It is rellevant to me as I am looking to sell a property in the 250-300K bracket very soon.

My personal preference in Virginia, but that’s because I’m a Civil War buff. The Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland is also nice.

Thanks.

With US ownership laws for foreigners, there may be a need to set up some holding company.
Er... uh... mate, I sincerely don't know about that. But get ready to pay nice bucks for legal advice.

my other thought on this is that your aim is fuzzy. if you want to rent it out, then go for long term rental. if you want a place to stay go to a hotel.

Don't want the competition?

I will be in the states later this year, looking at buying a property.

I want a place that I can rent out but use myself. It has to be relatively easy to get to from England.

I had thought about Florida as it is easy to rent out to Brits as well.

Any advice?
I wouldn't go down to Florida. With your big mouth someone there is definately bound to close it. Better move to San Francisco or New York City.

I'm serious...my wife and I have our condo in Naples for sale...newly refurbished and well located. Since we are trying to buy in Atlanta we would love to part with it for a good price (~158k). Message if you were interested as it would be hilarious if it sold to someone I met on a chess forum 🙂) I'm at recess_bully@yahoo.com

There are a lot of bargains going on now because housing markets are down. But, as these problems increase so do marketing scams!

It is a matter of record that there is a scam going on in the US to give people time shares around the country for practically free. The people take them thinking that they have won something. Then while they are gone for 2-3 weeks the company sells their house - to you! Since the company had everything set up in advance, with them and yourself, it was an easy matter to have one of their real estate people show you the house and close the deal before they came back.

Imagine both of your suprprizes when that happens. The company disappears, along with your money.

There's something called "plane" you know.

I own 4 flats in london that I rent out and about 3-4 years ago I considered buying a house in Orlando to live in for 3-4 months a year (to miss our British winters) and rent out for the remainder. I intended to use one of these management companies, it all seemed to stack up financially, but of course the risk is that either something has been overlooked or under estimated or even presented too optimistically by the management agent who were also selling me the property, so obvioulsy had a vested interest. What stopped me was that when I went back to them on the telephone with a list of worst case scenarios and how they would be dealt with, the guy got bad tempered and hung up on me in mid conversation! So it made me think how on earth would I cope if I had an empty house in Florida which could not be rented because the a/c had broken down and they throw a tantrum like this. I decided to only buy investment properties that I could easily manage myself as I think that when you start depending on others this is the area where most things tend to go wrong.

He probably got mad at you because he was trying to scam you and you weren't buying his BS. Kinda like the poor, mindless imbeciles who attack people here without probable cause, he was a loser.

i had a problem with holiday renting a house in sw ireland while living in london. as the area got more prosperous, i literally could not find anyone to paint the place, do landscape work or anything. i had to do it all myself, flying out and working on weekends. not much fun so i finally sold it.

Thanks.

It is still very much a maybe decision.

Your situation sounds very much like mine.

I enjoy DIY a lot and can do most things so some of the risks are reduced.

Thanks, the number of rednecks in Florida is definitely on my list of negatives.

There's also something called "saturated market". Perhaps you misunderstood my post.
