More difficult, but not impossible.
You claim you can catch a player who makes say 20 engine moves over the course of as many games?

how can someone use an engine for only one move a game and win ?

An important position where they have no idea what they should do next.

Most engines will look for the best moves, and from there tell you what it expects to see. Now you have great hints how the game should progress from this position you knew nothing about before you used the engine.

Speculation on my part.

By being a decent player without an engine? Or what Phlab said.

They will eventually be resigned without causing a rating change.

Not necessarily, only that it is possible as opposed to impossible.

Clearly, the less frequently an engine is used the more difficult it will be to detect.

But sometimes even one move can be quite damning. Sometimes engines can be pretty thick, but not half as thick as those who place their unquestioning trust in them. Remember this game?

Game 1441869

At the time, Black's rating was 2219 versus White's 1253.

You can read only one thing into Black's 11th move... and all because 0.00 is "better" for Black than say +0,21, or +0,30.

What a monkey!

Yes you have an excellent point. Of course if the engine user has even the slightest bit of common sense it becomes pretty much impossible.

EDIT: Of course the question remains why would anyone with a slight bit of common sense waste their time cheating on a chess site?

Also careful Gatecrasher, I wouldn't want a Game Mod to get a ban for cheating accusations. Checkmate was never banned, he just left when it became clear it was going to happen.

I'm sure everyone would enjoy that!

I suppose technically, I am in violation of a few rules here.

Here is my defence:

Firstly, this incident is in the public domain. Thread 31325
Secondly, the player is no longer active at RHP.
Thirdly, I needed a clear illustration of how even a single engine move can lead to a player's downfall.

Sorry, m'lud, but I acted for the common good. I'll happily be a martyr to the Cause.

I stole a loaf of bread!

You robbed a house!

I broke a window pane!
My sister's child was close to death
And we were starving!

And you will starve again
Unless you learn the meaning of the law.

I know the meaning of these 19 years
A slave of the law

Five years for what you did
The rest because you tried to run
Yes 24601

My name is Jean Valjean
