OK to respond, I wasn't trying to put him off, he's ahead in the game we're chatting in and is rated higher than me.
I will accept that I should have ended the conversation earlier when I realised he was a fruitloop but I just wanted to understand what he was getting at and make sure I hadn't done something offensive.
I do enjoy chatting in general and will start conversations in friendlies or one-on-ones but I hardly have the time to move in all my tourney games, let alone start conversations in them all. I will always respond to chat though, regardless of whether it comes at the beginning or the end of a game.
So, I think I'll carry on as normal and just chalk this up to experience, noting to avoid this particular player in the future...
I don't think you've done anything wrong at all. If the person didn't want to be distracted then the English language allows for short, but polite replies that hardly take up much brain power to. I don't always chat in games, but don't have a problem if someone speaks to me. You've got such long time controls that I don't see how chatting would effect your games at all.
You did nothing wrong, apart from not realising your opponent was crazy earlier on. Some people like to chat throughout the game, some do not (or in between). You haven't got a crystal ball to know what kind of person that is.
I normally don't chat in games with people I don't know. If they send me a message during the game, I will reply back and probably strike up a conversation.
Sometimes I might comment half way through a game in annoyance with myself if I make a bad move (not with the intention to distract!), or I might send a comment when I checkmate or resign (along the lines of "Well played" or "Good game"๐.
Too often people misinterpret what people say and think it is with bad intentions (especially on the net). They need to think, "Maybe they didn't intend it that way". Then again, some people just like to be confrontational just for the hell of it.

I've been having a discussion with someone I'm playing about when it is appropriate to chat in a game. The situation was that we were having two tight games and there had been no chatting in either until I won the first and chatted in the second to say well played etc.
My opponent seemed to take offence that I had waited so long to chat.
Looking at the conv ...[text shortened]... bly not going to agree but he has me wondering what other people think.

In every game that I start as white I always say something along the lines of 'Hello, best of luck'.
I do this because I'm English, and therefore incredibly polite, but due to the fact that if I were to play any of you in real life (scary thought - the outside World) then I would shake your hand and wish you luck. Why should playing on the Tinternet make us barbaric and forget our manners?
But thats just me!
