In every game that I start as white I always say something along the lines of 'Hello, best of luck'.
I do this because I'm English, and therefore incredibly polite, but due to the fact that if I were to play any of you in real life (scary thought - the outside World) then I would shake your hand and wish you luck. Why should playing on the Tinternet make us barbaric and forget our manners?
But thats just me!

I used to play squash, before I messed up my knee, and I always wished my opponent luck, meaning it. I want to win, but I am unwilling to become rude or dishonest to do so.
I want to play my best, and so long as I do that the end result is not overly important to me. I try to improve with each game and not fall for the same dumbass trap every game - and when I do play ok Im happy - win or lose.
So yes, when I say good luck to you in a game I mean it!

Saying: chess game is only chess, could start a small civil war in RHP !!!
P.S. There are those who take the game very seriously !

I've been having a discussion with someone I'm playing about when it is appropriate to chat in a game. The situation was that we were having two tight games and there had been no chatting in either until I won the first and chatted in the second to say well played etc.
My opponent seemed to take offence that I had waited so long to chat.
Looking at the conv ...[text shortened]... bly not going to agree but he has me wondering what other people think.

You did nothing wrong, apart from not realising your opponent was crazy earlier on. Some people like to chat throughout the game, some do not (or in between). You haven't got a crystal ball to know what kind of person that is.
I normally don't chat in games with people I don't know. If they send me a message during the game, I will reply back and probably ...[text shortened]... way". Then again, some people just like to be confrontational just for the hell of it.

OMG!! YOU SPEAK ENGLISH??!! Why did you choose to chat now??!!
jonnyt
My flag shows I'm British, are you being sarcastic? Unless I'm mistaken, you haven't chatted once in either of our games either.I won't bother again.
Jonnyt's response seems pretty rude and confrontational to me. Surely had jonnyt responded politely explaining there was a misunderstanding or something along those lines then they might even have become friends.
Instead jonnyt chose to continue trading insults. I agree the opponents first comment seems a bit disproportionate but surely thats even more reason to be polite if you wish to calm things down.

The opponent asked a simple question.
The response was very coarse by jonnyt.
However, I don't even see the point to the thread. There is no etiquette. You get on with it or you don't. You choose to engage or not. To me that's very simple!
