Well I'm here, arrived last Sunday. First and noteable observation: The driving here is absolutely suicidal, believe me. Has anybody been to a country where they thought the driving was crazy? Well beat China? They drive towards you, contraflow, where there is 3 lanes each way! The pedestrians don't use the pavement but walk down the middle of dual carriageways where traffic is doing 50mph. My getting to and from work is more stressful than my actual job! I can't really explain, but it's ruddy scary! Anybody here experienced being in a taxi in China?

Yes, another thing to note if you are a pedestrian, cars can turn right through a red light.

Which side of the road do they drive on - Europe or North America styles?

The right, that's why it's allowed. It's like a filter system, but they can actually drive through pedestrian crossings......or at least they do ad-infinitum.

HongKong drives on the Left though.

Theoretically they drive on the right. In practice, they choose whatever lane doesn't have a car in it!

What is the difference except that the European drivers are generally much more skillful drivers than the North Americans. He it is too easy to get a license because the road-tests are jokes, not to mention the written tests.

The driving in Rome is pretty scary too.

Shanghai has much better traffic dicipline than Beijing (Peking) because they have too many bicyclist on the road who don't care, but the roads are wide.

I worked in the States for a year. I had to get a US licence. I got in the car and the instructor said; take a left, take a left, take a left, take a left, take a left. I was back in the car park and she said; yep, you passed alright!

In Rome, there IS a kind of etiquette. I'm in a place called Wuhu, 100km south of Nanjing which is 350Km west of Shanghai....... so I'm in a TOWN (With a population of 2,5M!). The cars a bootleg copies of 30 yrs old cars, the glass in the doors rattles, if you can wind them up.... 600 people a day get killed and 45,000 a day are injured in China. Can that be topped?
