A mate of mine took a load of speed before a PE lesson once - it made him actually enjoy it, as it was athletics (400m etc.)
Ritalin is a type of speed.

Almost all 'illegal' drugs can cure some ailment of the human body, when used in moderation. That doesnt mean go snort coke in the bathroom, or smoke weed after school. People are stupid.

The post that was quoted here has been removedI agree. It isn't about being desperate. People do drugs in the US for an escape from... you guessed it... boredom.
As a parent I would suggest that you keep your kids busy in healthy activities such as plays, sports, chess. Kids don't play chess well when they are high. 😉
I'm 51 years old and have been off drugs for many, many years. But when I was in high school and for a few years after I did every drug known..acid, opium, speed, coke, heroin (smoking it only) angel dust...on and on and on.
I was a messed up, alienated kid..yes, and self destructive and stupid.
I don't think that getting kicked out of school would have helped. Thank God I was able to graduate and, after getting married and getting my head together, was fortunate to get a college education.
What did I really need back then? What was the problem? The usual suspects came into play - broken family, lack of any notice from my parents, bad crowd. Drugs and those who used them with me became my family. Became an addiction.
What opened my eyes was seeing those who I had befriended die or become totally useless. Had a roomamte who killed himself by jumping off the high bridge into the Mississippi River..that was a real awakening...I chose not to die.
Generally these kids have no one else. They are alienanted. Kick them out of school? They won't care. You have to give them a chance to get through it. They need support from positive role models...counselors, teachers maybe even clergy.
There, my true confession. Thank God my kids didn't follow my footsteps. How did I deserve that?

Expecting schools to be social workers and rehab facilities while still expecting every student to score high on bogus tests mandated by the president and taxpayers is only fine if you turn all schools into boarding schools and eliminate frivolities such as free time, media, more than 5 hours' sleep, etc. It is the parents' and extended family's job to be there for them. If your parents and extended family are at the lower end of the parenting spectrum, it's really awful and there should be some solution, but that solution doesn't include making the schools responsible unless the testing is eliminated and the schools are given much more legal authority.
how about: "if you have problems with drugs, addiction or anything else, we will be there for you, and help you get through school without messing up your entire future."

I'm not trying to 'blame the teachers' as you seem to perhaps think. all I'm saying, there should be programs to deal with these kind of problems (which I guess you agree with), trying to help the kids out, instead of kicking the 'problem' away from school. -sure the parents should take responsibility about bringing their kids up, as should the kids themselves, but when that fails it would be trivial to set up a safety net to catch the falling ones.
drivers are supposed to drive according to traffic regulations and conventions, responsible for obeying the rules and keeping themselves & others safe. but when someone crashes a car speeding, do we think "well, he chose to commit a felony, therefore he's on his own"? do we leave him bleeding to death? of course not. we have fire department to cut him out of the wreck, ambulance & paramedics to give first aid and speed him into a hospital, surgeons, nurses, social workers, the works. all this massive infrastructure to give him the chance to survive the thing.
why should messing up your future with drugs be different?
