Cold callers on hold game

Ok, this is something I read about elsewhere, and have found it to be most entertaining.

1) Wait for a cold call.
2) Wait for their pitch. (You know the bit where you normally swear at them and put the phone down.)
3) Say you are interested.
4) Very important this bit, make an excuse why you have to put them on hold.
5) Turn on phone monitor, kick back, and relax. DO NOT LAUGH.

I had a lady from 'homecall' (whoever they are) saying they could give me a better deal than BT. I said I needed to use the other phone, put her on hold, turned my music back on, and carried on working.

Cue coughs, ever more desperate cries of ‘Hellooooo?’ , until they disconnect.

I guess you could start talking for 30 seconds, expressing genuine and gullible interest, and then "just get the door" or something. If they think they've got you, you may get a 10 minuter...

I'd love to do this, but I'm not sure how I'd get away with it at work... I shall see.

That's not nice.

I had to work in telemarketing in Oz for a few months, and that trick was played on me a couple of times. In fairness, its not the callers fault that they rang u. Most telesales people work on a commission, so those 6 minutes that u leave them hanging are 6 minutes in which they can't earn any money.

If you're not interested, just tell them, and let them try to get on with their job.

Sorry, but time to fight back. I have something of a phone Spam epidemic at the moment. And anything to prevent them calling is fair game.

Edit :

And it most definitely is their fault. They represent the company that is wasting my life. Being distracted when programming doesn’t waste a few seconds, it can completely break your concentration. (Yes, I am at my most productive when in the 'zone'😉

Hehe

I usually hum and talk to myself and can totally tune everything else out... I probably look like a headcase.
People actually have to prod me and tell me that they're talking to me.

Try out www.antitelemarketer.com/php for more top-tips and stories.

edit: I should add that for those in the uk, get signed up with the tps ASAP. After a month or two it suddenly kicks in and the number of telemarking calls drops very noticably.

For those not aware of it,most telemarketers use automated computer dialing and the computer will dial 4or 5 numbers at once(I am guessing the number here)So when you pick up the phone there is a high percentage chance you will hear dead air ,ie;no sound at all. This is the dead giveaway you are about to be solicited by a telemarketer.Hang up as soon as you hear nothing .My guess is each person working there moniters these 4 or 5 callouts at once and if 2 or 3 people pick up the excess is transfered to other marketers. It works for my wife and I at least 90% of the time.Saves having to be rude which I am the other 10% of the time.Mike

i have a friend who used to work in telemarketing if sorts. he called some old lady, who wasn't intrested but wanted to know "what was up". so he told her, and had a nice half hour conversation with her telling her about his dog and whatnot...

Because of course they will respect your wishes and just leave you alone and get on with their work.

Get real! They are pushy sods and deserve all they get.

no way. these people choose to take jobs that involve bugging people and wasting their time. if i could make them wait on hold for an hour or a whole day i would do it. lots of them are backpackers seeking to prolong their holiday, and they are quite prepared to inconvenience other people to achieve this end. if everyone wasted their time in turn, it would be unprofitable and eventually stop.

The one thing ruining this game is the number of pre-recorded phone Spams I get. These are no fun at all.

Yep. I was one of those backpackers seeking to extend my holiday, and I refused to work in a call centre. Could have got any number of jobs doing this sort of thing, door knocking as well. Instead I chose to go and work my butt off on a farm in Queensland. Was glad I did in the end, had a brilliant two months, met some great people and got a good tan too 😀

Get a rope ! He's one of them !!!

Don't they have "caller I D " in the UK ? I look at the number on the screen . If it's not someone I know , or it's an a corporation , I don't pick up . They also have the tele-zapper here . It automaticly can tell if a call's computer generated and if it is erases your number from their computer as well as hanging up on them automaticly .

Russ your trick is great . I tried it once years ago but didn't time it . What was amazing in my instance is how long her sales pitch was . I first put the phone down because she wouldn't let me get in ONE word . Finally I thought 'if you're not interested in what I have to say then it's not a conversation , is it ?' I put the phone down and could hear the lady prattling on . She didn't even realize I'd set the phone down for several minutes .
