Before I go retrieve my hammer from my tool box I thought I'd have a go here and see if anyone can help a completely comp. illiterate dum dum fix her comp! Everything is freezing up constantly, I checked my performance and my CPU uasage is %100. Is that good or bad? I was told it was bad. 😞 I'm not running more than mabye two programs at a time so I don't know what the big deal is. I don't know what half this stuff on my comp even is. 😕 I just ran a defragmenter thingy on my C drive. What else should I do? 😳

Download spybot and run an adware scan. Also run a virus scan (I assume you have antivirus software?)

100% CPU usage is bad and that will slow your computer down a great deal. There is at least 1 process chewing up all the CPU time. You will need to find it and End it. So it's no surprise that your computer is freezing up.

What version of Windows are you running? If you have XP, you can do the CNTL-ALT-DEL and the go to "Processes" and see which process is taking up all the CPU time. Then, you can "End" that process". If it's a different version of Windows, well, it's a fairly similar process but I don't think they tell you which process takes up all the CPU time.

what are your operating system and computer specs?

microsoft has a new free anti-spyware program (beta) you can download.

i had a lot of trouble with XP service pack 1 before i installed mcafee, however, mcafee still did not kill a coolwebsearch spyware that installed itself. it would ramp CPU usage up to 100 pct and sometimes my laptop would shut down to avoid overheating. i downloaded adaware from www.download.com but it still didn't kill it. something hijacked the windows and mcafee update site access on my computer, too, would not let me access them. think i finally detected and deleted the worst stuff with ad aware and/or cwshredder (also downloaded from www.download.com) and deleted the final one they found by renaming it first (i couldn't delete it til i renamed it). forget the exact name of the file, tho. i installed microsoft antispyware after that, i think. have not had any problems recently but a lot of microsoft patches have gone into my machine since then, too.

on my newer desktop i already have XP service pack 2 and norton, have not had any problems so far.

so, try ad aware (free), cwshredder if needed (if ad aware detects coolwebsearch), microsoft antispyware beta (free), norton (not free). also make sure your microsoft windows is up-to-date (should be able to find update page on www.microsoft.com, if you don't already see it on your Start bar).

the problem with XP service pack 1 being that it lets spyware get in.

you should back up your stuff. wouldn't want to lose anything.

i also blocked all internet access to the .cc domain (czechoslovakia), seeing as how a lot of popups to domains from there were being generated by the spyware and i don't plan to visit there anytime soon. later i found a site forbid list on google groups and pasted it into the deny list in internet properties.

before that as soon as i logged on i would get popups saying something like "Warning! your system is infected by spyware! click here to get the antidote!"

if you have XP or NT after clicking on Ctrl-Alt-Del, click on the Processes tab, then click on the header of the CPU column, to sort by CPU usage. the processes using the CPU the most will show up at the top.

if you don't have XP or NT try going to download.com to look for utilities that can show the running processes.

It'd probably be a lot easier and less time consuming for her to simply do a complete wipe, reinstall the o.s., and then install firefox as her browser.

if o/s reinstall is an option then she could install linux.

assuming her ISP allows it.

apparently o/s reinstall not an option ...

re the CPU column, in XP (at least) click on it twice, otherwise you'll get the least-using processes at the top.
