Turns are in, for real this time 😉.
Hmmm ... been offered 11 alliances, 3 daughters' hands in marriage and 2 souls of unborn children ...

Bit disappointed! 😀

I can see it's going to take a while to get used to the set-up. Two army units I formed were disbanded because they were empty!

I find the interface - generally good - but a little confusing; especially the army/garrison list at the bottom of the map page ...

I get the feeling I'm going to have to write down what I plan to do first on a bit of paper - at the moment it's a bit of a random reassign ranks/transfer troops between armies/recruit troops ... but not much moving!

Great fun!

Chief Boz has been rolling and weeping on the floor of his den all morning. I am becoming quite concerned. When I enquired what was the matter, he turned to me a bleary eye, let out a strangled cry and guffawed, "Hound rider dragoons!", and the whole sorry spectacle began again.

I don't know how I'm going to cope.

The unit list at the bottom is the soul of your map page. First, look at the map and get a rough idea what your plans are. Then, buy your troops wherever you need them. Then, go through that unit list and figure out what each unit's job is, splitting them up, combining them or reallocating troops between them until each can do it's job.

So, what are peoples' feelings for what their race's strengths are? I already know mine; Dwarven Rune Guards (HP). Corsairs are naval stuff. What do the other races have strength in? Bows for Elves I am guessing?

They can be tough buggers ... especially when their attackers unwittingly attack a fort with weak units ... my first battle report consisted of many, 'I lost another fecking unit??' exclamations ...

On edit: The whole 7 gold for a 'good' proclamation can be done every turn, right?

Yeah. You really need to use the Battle Calculator or do it manually to get a rough idea what kind of losses you'll take.

Funny you mentioned the rune guards for dwarves - they were the ones I was losing - have to check if there's an attack/defense difference.

If you are only losing Rune Guards, you're doing ok. That's what they're for, and they are very, very good at it (taking hits).

Correct.

Wargs, shooters, Black Orcs all the way, as far as straightforward fighting troops are concerned.

Tip if you're new: start annexing your conquered provinces, and don't forget to pilage them either.

If you're a Commoner, you might only want to annex the wealthiest provinces, since you can only have 7 annexed at a time. Pillage the others.

EDIT - Those Orcish Bowmen seem pretty good compared to my Crossbowmen (don't even look at the Dwarven archers' stats).

How many Rune Guards did you lose? Those are big units. If you lost even 2 of them that's a severe hit to your forces...but at least it was all Rune Guards and not Bears or something.

It seems a pity that you have to slaughter independents before you can move onto their land. I noticed a very pretty green dragon on the map; it would be a shame for it to have to die. Can't it be bribed with biscuits?

That dragon is a brutal overlord; think of him as the Saddam Hussein of green dragons. Once he's overthrown the green dragons will be able to hold elections and stuff.

Here we start with the us-or-them rhetoric already...You dwarves should step outside and sniff the breeze once in a while instead of holing up in your lousy dungeons...Orcs are sensitive eco-warriors, the whole environment needs to be conserved, all wild creatures too...if it means we got to take over the world to save our Green Ma, then that's what we got to do...
