I try to get it done as early as possible to allow maximum time for diplomacy and potential changes to plans.

I try to get the diplomacy done first so that I don't need to change everything again, then I procrastinate for a few days and end up doing a lot less diplomacy than planned, and then I get my orders in the last day.

I'm going to have to pay more attention to the map so i can see when the wars start.

Once (if) you have a more powerful nation, with larger land to cover, you get many more options and have more things to do. I used to think the same as you, but 1 a week is the best.
