So, I got a new job, a very good job. Now I must get a drug test. I don't do drugs, never have. I have however had a few drinks in the past few days. Does anyone who has experience or knowledge in these matters know if an employment drug screening tests for alcohol?

Alcohol is perfectly legal. Why would it matter?

As long as you're not drunk on the job.

You sound a bit paronoid!!

I really doubt it will screen for acohol but I haven't any experience of these tests. Congrats on your new job, is that the one you were deciding about a while ago? That was you wasn't it?

I think so, it was a few months ago that I started the "I hate my job" thread. I am paranoid, I don't want to lose this by pi$$ing in a stupid cup.

edit - and thanks for the congrats 🙂

No, sure you don't but you don't want to get all stressed either. Perhaps there's a test/medical site that has the answer? Like Rb said with alchol being leagal, and you've only had a few drinks..it's not likelly. I think you're proberly worrying over nothing 🙂

From what I understand, alcohol doesn't show up after 24 hours.
I think mostly they are looking for marijuanna, cocaine, heroin, meth, etc.. Acid won't show up. I believe mushrooms won't either.
Have a nice trip then? 😛

I don't think it's likely you'll be randomly tested for alcohol unless you are subject to DOT testing (assuming you are in the US). They can probably do it for "probable cause" but then I'm would have to believe they would have to establish a BAC tolerance. Even the DOT has a BAC limit that they tolerate, and it would be likely that that would be the litmus test standard. IMHO.

If you get on your lips drunk from time to time, like Ice says, it may very well take 24 hours to get it out of your system. As a general rule of thumb, one hour per ounce of alcohol is what is generally thought by the substance abuse profession.

I thought I read something just a while back that shrooms can be detected. And for a longer period of time than coke, speed, etc...

Of course I am working from a memory that was shattered in my youth from willing participation.

They say your body is a temple... I always thought of mine as more of a fun ride. 😉

And that helped how??

Terrific input. Coming from the aviation field, I hope your input from the tower is much more informative and helpful than keying the mike and saying "NOOBEE"

Our tax dollars at work, good christ.

they'll likely use the cheap-o test where they dip a strip of paper in the urine. if you haven't had alcohol in 12 hours or so, you're clean.

Alcohol won't show up on a standard pee in a cup drug screen. They test for specific metabolites related to particular drug types. Alcohol gets processed back into sugars first (I think) so there are no real traces once it's been completely worked through your system. You can get false positives from various prescription drugs and even some food - apparently poppy seeds can cause a positive in the "opiates" category (opium/morphine/heroin.)

If you're worried, drink a couple of cups of coffee in the morning and a litre or two of water. You will urinate enough to make any metabolite concentrations too low to measure properly with the standard tests.
