I'm thinking about buying some gold, nothing fancy, a couple of rings, and maybe a couple of necklaces. The prices over here are shocking, i bought an 18c necklace for €180 in Hongkong, and the equivelant over here is a over double the price.....and they don't even do 24c here.

Is it worth my while going to Dubai to purchase ? I have sourced the holiday at a grand, give or take. Has anyone else made a similar trip ?

There is a Southern city in India, forget the name, but its the new city of Gold.

You will need to be careful if you decide to go there, they will rip you off and pick your bones clean before you step into the store.. The pressure they put you on to buy is unbelievable. The trick is to pretend its a one way conversation, you talk, they are not there.

India is one of the best places for gold in terms of quality, hand crafts, and cost. Indian gold looks so orange, you can distinguish it a mile away.

PS. Dubai's gold mostly comes from India.

I don't like the idea of getting ripped off πŸ™

I just want to buy some 24ct stuff, but only if it doesn't break the bank. I thought thoses places were regulated πŸ˜•

Its cheep, but not as i originally thought.. everything is going up in prices very rapidly, and you have to shop around before committing.

Its definitely worth going there, not only for gold. Its an amazing place, and you will find what you want and more.

Dubai is certainly for the non-adventurous. Tax free zone is a big bonus too. And its a place you can take your family with you and feel much more secure than if you went to India. Also worth going to, but it is more expensive.

First Rule of buying gold: Don't buy anywhere that haggling is considered part of business, you'll get robbed.

Second Rule of buying gold: If you're doing it as an investment, don't. The "Gold Standard" doesn't really mean much in the modern economy - it has been replaced by owning crap that's actually worth owning.

Third Rule of buying gold: Don't take any advice from anyone in an online forum - and yes, that includes me. Except this rule.

No - if you read it properly my advice is that gold is not a good investment for someone who hasn't already made a mint off of something else. Then my advice was not to buy gold from people who price it in an unregulated way that allows for price changes - that means that they are asking more than it's worth in the first place. Finally, my advice was not to ask for advice here - where (as you well know yourself) you will be given every dodgy answer that every idiot can think up. Although, my advice about not listening to everyone else still includes me. I suggest you research investing on your own until you know enough to realize that gold is a long long long term investment, and not something that a few chains and rings will make any real money on.

Nothing wrong asking for opinions.

Forums are one the fastest methods of info sharing in our day.. whether you take these answers and follow them blindly, add them to a bigger archive of info you collected and make use of the best of it, or think everything said here is nothing but dodgy shyte... that.. is your choice.

The question wasn't to buy blocks of gold.. all what huckleberryhound after is a couple of rings and necklaces..

I understand that - I was mistaken. I have met a lot of people who think that buying a load of gold chains and whatnot is an investment. I am also mildly intoxicated. So, as I said before, don't take my forum advice - it's obviously crap.
