JK was made after her first book was published. She didn't really need to make any efforts with the ones that followed as she had readers hooked already. I suppose a little like the Jaws films when they first came out. The first one was great (in its day) and the rest slowly deteriorated but it was a film that you had to watch as the first was so good.
Either way, I really don't think she would be too short of cash to keep her characters alive like the story that was in the papers today.
