Widget, you made a good, though childishly idealistic, point that HoH should figuratively pick on someone his own size, but I fail to see the racism in his post above that which can be projected by those looking to stir controversy. If you have proof of racist behaviour in this thread then, by all means, share it with the rest of us... otherwise could you kindly keep the mindless babbling for your pillow?
"...I loaded my cart with enough beer and food to feed a large Mexican family for a month"
Childishly naive or not, in your opinion, it is exactly this kind of back-handed and intrinsically disrespectful ethinc slur that perpetuates racial hatred 😛 Did you follow the U.S. immigration law thread?

Glad to see I have a fan.
🙄 The entire move towards trying to stratify their population and keep it safe in Fortress USA is the first peal of the bell tolling on the end of the US Empire... not to mention pointlessly unenforceable.

Good thing he didn't load his cart with enough beer and food to feed a large German family for a month because that would earned him a ban for OBVIOUS RACISM. (Plus a hefty bill).
Go blow your little whistle up your toot.

The same 'joke' could have featured any race or ethnicity and it would have been just as distasteful. 😕
😀 I may be hopelessly chilidishly naive but I believe that this kind of thoughtless and utterly mindless ethnic harrassment fuels the larger and more obviously harmful perspectives that gave us such winning notions as 'the master race' and 'apartheid'. Rampant neo-nazi skinhead louts are everywhere, all the time, as insidious as rust. Tolerating this nonsense only perpetuates their dismal perspectives 😞

Why would you have said: If you have proof of racist behaviour in this thread then, by all means, share it with the rest of us... if you realized the comment was racist?
And if you realized the comment was racist, then how can I be projecting racism where there was none?
Originally posted by widgetI understand your point to an extent, but what would have been acceptable? If 'Mexican' isn't acceptable, then why is 'large' okay or even 'family'?

The purpose of the phrase was to create a mental image. I presume there's an association in American minds between 'large family' and 'Mexican'. Sure, it's a stereotype, but it may well have some basis in truth because Mexicans are predominantly Catholic and Catholics tend to have larger families than Protestants.
It's really only perjorative if you think there's something WRONG with having a large family.
"Enough food to feed a large number of people" really doesn't have the same ring to it. Surely there has to be some licence for storytelling. It would be entirely different if HoH had criticised the Mexicans for having a large family, but he didn't. That wasn't the point.
...and now I'm going to have to go back and read the story to remind myself that it was actually pretty funny...

I did not perceive the original article to be racist, when you started preaching about racism I searched the post to look for what you were on about, I figured that it was the comment about Mexicans, because that was something that you could just manage to stretch to suit your upright, holier than thou, posturing. Do not attempt to twist my words. I did NOT think the comment was racist. YOU did. I realised that YOU thought the comment was racist.

To YOU it implies something distasteful about Mexicans and their families because you have sought to squeeze an argument out of this thread, and here you persist in preaching your narrow minded view of the world. You state that the intention of the original phrase was to keep us somehow divided, you cannot back that up, you have no evidence of the division caused by having a knowledge of a culture that is different to yours. The differences between cultures are to be focused on and taken into account if we are ever to overcome these divisions, you would rather sweep them all under the carpet and pretend we're all the same, well we're not.
The same 'joke' could have featured any race or ethnicity and it would have been just as distasteful.
Really? Since when is "Mexican" a race? You are full of crap.

And flying off the handle with bullish claims of racism serves only to make people of different races even more insulated against each other for fear of stepping on some Dorothy-do-gooder's toes as we are lectured time and time again about what is right and what is wrong from idiots like you who think they have some golden vision where everyone can be friends equally and we're all just people man. Rubbish. Tolerating your nonsense only perpetuates censorship and the infringement of our birth-right to think freely and for ourselves.
