Chances are the topics discussed here do no get brought up in friendly conversation.
Chances are people in person are not as much of a dick* head in person.
So saying you are friends with someone in person does not you would be friends here. If the person is a liberal you would likely be a friend, but if the person is conservative then you would be an enemy.

The massive amount of "get no respect" you are greeted with is because of you and what you are like and the things you say. You can't hide behind "being a teacher".
