Maradona elevated the play of his teammates. Messi plays poorly, everyone plays poorly. Unable to convert against Peter Chech? That says it all! NO big time hardware to show for his talent. Messi gets blown upon by a deender and down Messi goes. It is the Barcelona way. Don't get me wrong. His kills set is unlike anyone's in the world right now, yet he does really poorly on his national side. Give me Ronaldinho in his prime any day!

your living in a cultural vacuum,
Its awesome to be Scottish, you get to support every team that plays against the Angles and gives them a whuppin!
You poor, pathetic lot, do you really have so little sporting prowess to be proud of yourself that you must take your enjoyment from seeing the English beaten? And they're such an easy target, too... no real man would stoop as low as picking on the English.

24th June, 2012th, 700 anniversary of the English defeat at the hands of brave Scots at
the Battle of Bannockburn, when you were sent hame tae think again! Awesome.
Ten score and one years later was your second great victory over the English.
And your third great victory over the English, in all the five hundred long years since? Never happened. They own you, and they own you for ever.
Even an ostrich doesn't stick its head in the sand that deeply.

Messi fails to impress me as much as he does he world. He's talented to be sure, but he functions as a center forward, not a striker. He just happens to be a high scoring center forward. I don't think I've seen Messi do actual strikes. He finesses his play too much to be a pure striker. I do not take away his supreme talent. I have never seen Messi make a Muller like or Borja like strike. As for Rooney he functions well in either role.

my man, you know nothing! England deserve to be mocked, only today, the Scouser,
Gerrard was telling is that the English goalkeeper is the best in the world, i had to laugh!
Originally posted by Shallow BluePerhaps, but a true striker is always a thing of beauty. I certainly see your point as well and therein lays the reason as to why they are a disappearing breed. NO question multidimensional players present greater value since they can feed the ball on off days whereas an off day striker is fairly useless. I also think the greater athleticism of defenders nowadays makes a pure striker less effective.
