I haven't found many good places to play (in Northern CA), but there is one spot near me (a coffee shop) where people get together every day and play (usually) blitz games. The coffee shop attracts some pretty strong players from 1600 up to 2000+. I win a few games, but mostly, I get crushed.

I have played him in Harvard Square about 10 times, lost everyone. There are also 2 Russinas that play there regularly (One is in the background).

It's a wine bar and they have chess boards inlaid into the tables. I've never played there - we moved away before I got into chess again.
It's a nice atmosphere (for drinks anyway) and the food is good. No Idea what the quality of player is like.
