According to the 'story,' Eratosthenes observed light in a well (and the lack of shadow thereof) on June 21 in Syene while at the same time a shadow was observed in a well in Alexandria, some 500+ miles south of his position.
Yup.
That sounds about right.
He was inexplicably able to determine the exact position of the by the sun in two cities on the same day at the same time... separated by nearly a month of walking.
He also knew the two spots were precisely along the same meridian.
Assuming he was "told" the information he used, he also knew exactly how tall the person who peered into wells was, in addition to knowing the size of their heads--- although he probably had a good idea how big at least one of them was: his own.
It doesn't help the story to ask how he would have been "told" that tidbit of information, since it only casts more doubt on it in the first place.
Additional problems enter when one realizes the person doing the calculating would need to know the distance to the light source, as well.
Good ol' science: you know it can be explicitly and implicitly trusted, no matter what... just ask it!

Personally i like a good conspiracy theory, with others though i can see the 'reason' for them. JFK, 911, Princess Diana, the Moon Landings, for all of them i can understand the reasons as to why they exist. I don't believe them, but i get them. As for the flat earth conspiracy, i can't think of a reason as to why countless people have ben propagating this monumental lie for hundreds of years?!

Also, why would the Russians be in on the conspiracy also? You have to widen your paranoia to the entire scientific world for that to work. The Chinese, the Italians, the Brits, the Russians and Americans have all sent people to ISS. So I guess they are in on the big secret too?
