I have always been interested in the free masons but don't know to much about them. I was considering petitioning for membership, as I am interested in community service and what not. Can anyone tell me anything about this group.

You need to be introduced into the masons.
Get to know your manager and get into "going out" with him. In other words, network.
And then mention a programme you seen once on the BBC about masonry and that it's a criminal organisation, but that you yourself have doubts.

they say they make good men better, I really curious about that. I want to be the best father and best husband and best teacher and the best man I possibly can be. I have made terrible mistakes in my life, now I am looking for outlets to grow...was just curious if freemasons can help.

Nope.
Playing with the lego with your child will make you a good father.
Hugging your wife daily will make you a good husband.

The Free Masons make you swear loyalty to them above all else.

i think it's fair to say that the wikipedia entry is a) interesting and b) sympathetic to masonry in its coverage of controversies etc.

I've only read part of this so far but bookmarked it for later. It's quite interesting! Thanks!

I thought freemasonry meant the mortar had not set properly.

I would think that some of 'em do. Too bad I didn't have this question Saturday. We had both a Freemason and a Masonry contractor at the party at our house. I could have asked. Perhaps they'll both be on the fishing trip this spring. They've both been before.

A friend of mine is a free mason, he says all you have to do is ask them, and that gets the ball rolling.
