"How many times have I read that?" she wondered.

How many times have I? he pondered, putting down the yellowed page he'd started reading while going through his wealthy neighbour's trash.

24. 'Perhaps I'm just a character in a work of fiction too', he thought as he turned to start the long walk home, with nothing to show for several hours' rummaging but a dog-eared work of metafiction with several pages missing. Somewhere, off in the distance, a dog howled. He paused. Something had changed. Something fundamental. Something he couldn't quite put his finger on.

He looked up. Hanging in the sky, somewhere between the evening star and the constellation Orion, was a short piece of text, in glowing green letters that must have each measured light-years in height and width. The message said 'GAME OVER'.

37. She looked to her left and there, laying beside her, was Ben. It had been a dream she thought. Thank goodness. As she slowly removed the sheet , so as not to awaken Ben, she noticed the light on the phone indicating a message. She made her way to the great room's phone and pressed *98, entered her code, pressed 11 and listened as Doyle's voice blurted out ...........

He says there are more people writing this novel than there are reading it, and it's about time to wrap it up, so make your final arrangements, and say your prayers and goodbyes. 40. Oh, all right.😕

Sheila had the strangest feeling as if the whole world had come to a complete stop for a moment. Of course, it was ridiculous. She became aware of the telephone receiver pressed to her ear. Doyle was saying something. '...Sheila, I lost my wallet with the secret code in it. Will you help me find it?'

'Of course I will, Doyle dearest', she replied. 'Only promise me something...'

'Anything, Sheila. Anything'.

'Promise me things will go on being the same, forever and ever?'

'Of course they will, Sheila. Exactly the same. For ever'.

41. Sheila knew, from past experiences, that Doyle lied "like a cheap rug" but she went along with him in hopes of being able to bridge the gap that had grown, to a chasm, since there last episode. "When and where can we meet?", she asked. "Not any time soon I'm afraid. I'm having a bit of a "holiday" on the governments tab but expect to be out in about 2 months, assuming I can continue to follow the rules. Are you sure you want to do this?" Sheila bit her tongue and said," Of course I do you know that". Doyle thought to himself, Ya right whatever. Here we go again"

42. As soon as Doyle hung up his phone (which was actually his beard trimmer..a piece of "their" ingenuity) Dr. Black entered and said, "Well Doyle, if that's really your name, talking to those imaginary friends again are we? What have they got to say this time?" "None of your beeswax. That was a private conversation I was having with an ex girlfriend if you must know". Dr. Black clasped his hands behind his back and said. " I think it's time for another 'session' don't you?" No I'll be good , I promise. Please no more". Dr. Black chortled as he called for his assistant Mr. Amp to take Doyle to "The Room".

43. 'We call him "Mr. Amp" because he likes to work with electric currents', said Dr. Black, as Doyle was strapped to a chair inside 'The Room'. 'I see that you look shocked. Well, wait until he begins his work. he's quite the artist, you know'.

'I'll never talk! No matter what you do', said Doyle.

'You're talking now', pointed out Dr. Black.

'Damn!' said Doyle. 'You guys are good'.
