102. The game ended with a stunning defeat. No one imagined the hidden depth of black Queen's sacrifice combination. Doyle was foiled again. He believed that Ben would have Sheila pinned down in rapture, enjoying her dark squares of chocolate, oblivious to his army of ants storming the flank. Alas, even Doyle, the extreme calculator, underestimated his knight. Sir Ben was more than just a double agent. No he was in love with the beauty, and the power of her throne. No, it was Ben who delivered the King on a fork in the end as Sheila smiled and claimed first prize.

103. Doyle fumed. "That was just the beginning! This is a swiss double chocolate elimination. We'll see who ends up in the pastry pan!"

104. Doyle's buzzer sounded (William Tell Overture). He asked Noel, the security man, what he wanted. Noel said," Excuse me sir but there is a young lady inquiring about you." Doyle said: "What young lady?" Noel pointed the camera towards the woman and Doyle had to steady himself on the phone table. "Latitsia is that really you?" "Yes Daddy it's really me. Can I come up?" "Yes of course. Noel please let my daughter up". He couldn't believe what was happening. Had it really been 20 years now, since last he'd seen her? Why, out of the blue, had she shown up? How'd she known where to find him? Did her mother (Sheila) know that she was here? Had she put her up to it? So many unanswered questions. So many years to catch up on and a bit, just a bit of apprehension.

105. L and Doyle greeted hesitantly. They tried to "hug" but the gap of so many years loomed large between them. They awkwardly sat in the nook. L spoke with a broken trembling soft voice. "Daddy, I read about what happened between you and mom. i'm sorry. I came to tell you."

106. "Latitsia please understand that I am in shock. After so many years it'll take a bit of time for me to digest the fact that you're actually here. Can I get you a little 'something'? I know I need a wee dram". Latitsia said, "Thank you no but please you go ahead. I can imagine what this 'surprise' is doing to your head". Doyle poured himself a shot of Oban with one icecube. He took a sip and stared at the beautiful woman who was his daughter. "Did your mother have anything to do with your being here?" he asked. ""No dady, mother has no idea that I'm here, as a matter of fact I haven't seen her for about a year now. After I graduated from Boston College last year I've been travelling with a friend. You remember Ben's son Lorenzo don't you? Well he and I have just returned from a a year of seeing the world". Doyle took another sip and said, "How is Lorenzo? Did he finish his PHD?" "No he didn't. He felt the need for some downtime as he was having trouble with the last 'bits' and called me to congratulate me on my graduating and as the saying goes "the rest is history". Tell me what's been happening in your life dad"

107. Well, L, quite frankly my life's been on the Fritz lately. It seems that the global economic meltdown has everyone on edge and the world of arbitrage and takeovers is as bitter as ever. I spend all my time trying to see how things are going to play out in 4-6 months, and into the next 5-10 years, and making good choices for the investors. Every once in a while we get things right, but most of the time, someone comes along and fouls things up.

109. Latitsia nodded and frowned in understanding. Doyle could see her beautiful mother's face in that sympathetic expression.

110. Look, Dad, the main thing is that you tend to see everything in black and white, and all of the players as just elements to be manipulated. What if you took a different approach?

111. What the hell is she talking about, Doyle wondered.

112. She went on, realizing that she might as well have been talking in Hmong! Dad, look, what if there didn't have to be just a winner and a loser? What if EVERYONE could win?

113. Doyle understood, now, that she truly was lost, probably forever. She clearly didn't understand how the real world worked. He had one last shot, he thought, at making her understand.

114. He walked to the safe and opened it. He pulled out a box of dark Godiva chocolates. He handed one to her. "Here, darling, have just a little taste.

115. A light went on in her head. "Daddy why didn't you ever do this before? These are ...well delicious. Where di you get them?" This, my darling, is now the "New gold", he said. "I have managed to corner the market and plan to to squeeze' the powers that be to bend to my wishes" Latitsia couldn't beleive what she was hearing. Had he gone mad? Had mother been right? Surely this couldn't be. "Daddy, why are you doing this? What would drive you to think that they would cowtow to you threats?"
