Franklin D. Roosevelt

I am by no means a Democrat, but this man did end the Great Depression, which many forget was effecting the entire world's economy. The New Deal Programs is one of the most crowning achievements of the U.S. government in this century.
In hindsight, it is obvious that WW2 is what really boosted the economy and really ended the Depression, but FDR must be given credit. After all... he did decide to go to war after Pearl Harbor. some other democrat, say Clinton, would have been really spineless about it, tried to use diplomacy and garbage, and we would have never entered the war, and Europe would have been boned like a hurricane by Hitler and his Germany.

I was surprised that he hadn't been mentioned in the past 9 pages of discussion...

Eisenhower should be noted if I'm going to try to argue a case for Roosevelt...

The difference is the amount of people involved, and that Ghandi used totally non-violent means.....a truely great man.

If we have to count all the figureheads that overcame a localised government, then we'll have a much bigger list. The death of aparthied was a good thing, but why choose Mandela, why not Boetha ?

And what about Yassar Arafat, he had more to do with the struggle of his people than Mandela did with his ?

nod of agreement, people on this list should contain international reasons for nomination...
Gandhi set nonviolence precedence across the globe...
hate to say it, but maybe MLK shouldn't be on the list

here's a nomination I can think of, this being a chess site and all...
Bobby Fischer
anyone who read the article in the September Chess Life magazine should be privvy to the impact of the 1972 Fischer-Spassky Match

Outside South Africa, what do Mandela do ? Has he helped in Sierra Leone, or Sudan, or even Zimbabwe ? He was a figure head for a localised movement, and spent 30 years in prison. I'm not saying he wasn't a great man, but there are better.
What, are you going to pick on Mother Teresa next because she helped the poor and sick?

I agree with you about Roosevelt, but what Christal ball are you using concerning Clinton. You don't know what Clinton would have done, besides Congress declares war. Don't knock diplomacy. It has probably saved your life on more than one occasion. All Presidents use diplomacy.

I was surprised no one mentioned FDR also.

I think he is probably the greatest president of the 20th century, but Reagen is more popular because he is more recent.

But I have to disagree with you on Pearl Harbor. Any President would have gone to war with any country who declared war on us.
