We used to... they broke in half so often when we jumped that eventually the knee developed.

sorry professor phlabibit, but i think you might be mistaken - the skeleton may have evolved with knees from the get-go. looking for some evidence, haven't really found it yet, but there's a nice documentary on human evolution at http://www.becominghuman.org/.
