My mother once had a sock reappear after a few days or weeks in the lint filter. It didn't look very pretty.

Washing machines eat the occasional sock. There is a gap in between the tub and the outer casing of the machine. Sometimes when laundry is carelessly whipped in and out of the washer a sock goes through that gap and then is torn to smithereens by the motor. No damage to the motor if the socks are cotton, but nylon socks that meet this demise can gum up the works. I've seen it happen.
