Didn't you (or some of your parents,since you were young) thought about a less brutal and painful way to kill your dog?
While you were at the vet,didn't you thought about asking him if he could do something to alleviate your dog's sufferences?

If you're going to build up some lame story to feel solidal with someone ,at least build it in a way that someone can actually believe it.

The answer is simple:assuming all of your four points I still would have waited to see how the cat was and ,in case,asked to some adult to try to end the cat's sufferences in the less possibly painful way.
