I do an activity with my students sometimes, I show them pictures of the most famous people in history and ask them if they know who they are.
We're talking very famous here, Marilyn Monroe, JFK, Bruce Lee, John Lennon, Charlie Chaplin, Jocky Wilson.
They all seem to know them, although occasionally there's one who doesn't recognise John Lennon or forgets Chaplin's name. Virtually nobody knows Jocky Wilson, great shame (see my new clan).
My question is, who has the most recognisable face in history, who is the biggest icon? I don't mean the most famous person, I mean the one whose face would be recognised by the most people, of all ages and all over the world.
I have to say, from my experience so far, it would seem to be Bruce Lee.
Really!
There is no "greatest" icon. You'll find persons who don'tknow anybody. MAo Tse Dong or example is very well knwo, as are Hitler and Stalin Karls Marx with his impressive beard...
Never, never go for sportsmen. Thye will just fade away, even the great Muhammed Ali, or Franz Beckenbauer or Bjorn Borg (jusr to name a few who competed in well televised sports.
Never had heard of this Wilson guy and well he certinly won't make it....
Originally posted by asromacalcioOf those you mentioned, the only one I am reasonably sure I would have recognised is Charlie Chaplin. I had never heard of Jocky Wilson and had to look up Bruce Lee (I knew I had heard the name, but didn't know in what context). Wikipedia had some pictures of him, and I am reasonably sure I wouldn't recognise him the next time I see a picture of him; I don't find anything easily recognisable in his appearance.

I agree with those who mentioned Einstein - that picture must be one of the most known pictures of people, and it's easily recognisable. On the other hand, if you'd show people a picture of Einstein at a different age, I don't know if they would still recognise him. I probably wouldn't, but that doesn't say much.
