I was about to go play chess at the club tonight, when I decided to sit in front of my monitor and drink while playing chess. Is playing in a social setting becoming a lost art because we're all internet junkies? It's just too easy to sit at home and play. Why drive downtown, especially when you can cruise the forums and chat also?
Like having a chess club in your home. I think it's both a good thing and a crying shame.
I think you have a good point here, in fact the internet is changing so many things ! I don't know of a local chess club around here, but I would be tempted to go, after all, chess is really good as a social thing. But you are right , the internet means we can be very lazy, which isn't always a good thing maybe ?
interesting thread.
I think for every real life chess club member that is not attending so they can stay home and play in their pants, there is another one who is only there because the internet helped get them into the game in the first place, or provided the resources to keep them keen.
Biggest problem for chess clubs is officious types who insist you're in the wrong room. This is the general room, chess is round the corner.

Originally posted by Sam The ShamI agree it allows me to be lazy! On the other hand I am physically disabled with diabetis and diabetic neurapathy in my legs to where it's really hard for me to get up the energy to go anywhere!!! Especially as when I get there I MUST take my shoes and socks off, or sit there in pain the whole time! I've actually been told by one club that I cannot be there, as playing barefoot is embarrassing some members! Especially the ones I beat regularly!! Like the club president! But even aside from that is that I probably would not have gotten back into chess at all after over thirty-five years, if it were not for this forum of play! Then, when I discovered people actually wouldn't accept that I HAD to play with slippers (and even slippers hurt, just not as much) or barefoot, I said to He** with'em and have played exclusively on here the past month! SO! That's why I don't "Drive downtown"

The post that was quoted here has been removedThis is not about chess, it's about the internet. Learn to read, you!
I play at a club as well as here. I never cancelled a clubnight just to stay at home and drink a beer during play on rhp. I can imagine that there are people who do, but for me, it works differently.
In general, the internet does replace social interaction, although people who actually get involved in this matter say that the internet is the ultimate social experience. Not true though, because the distances are too big to really interact properly. If you insult one here, or let your clan down or some, you don't really get punished for it. In real life interactions, you wouldn't even think of something like that.

PS: I've also shown this site to two others, one of which has signed up while the other say's he NEVER will, from the comments made during his games! Ya listingin' "Loser"!
