I think it tends to be frowned upon in your average, non chess club pub. I've certainly had a few sneering comments made by idiots who seem to feel threatened by a board with 32 little men on it. Yet it is perfectly acceptable to throw spears at a round board or pay a quid to get ball sout of a machine and put them all back in again.
Crazy! 🙄

Edit : If you want to find a chess club, there are a few knocking about. Just have a quick google and find your local.

I already play at my local club.
I doubt I'd play in a pub because there's nothing worse for my chess than alcohol!

One of the local city clubs here, meets in a bar, which is nice. 🙂
The other one meets at the university. Which has a Starbucks and a Taco Bell.

I might look like a nerd but I don't think I look snotty nosed. Perhaps I have set up in the wrong type of pubs though, and I do seem to have one of those faces that says 'Please punch funk out of me.'

I've been there, but it was the person I was playing doing all the screaming and shouting 😛
