Originally posted by rhbYeah, I know, but i figured no one would listen to more than one from each link. So I only counted them as seven tunes total, and the Miles Davis is an album, but if you follow the listening directions, you won't get up and change the tracks. LOL!!
Thanks Greg - not quite the 15 song playlist that was asked for, but food for thought nonetheless.

I still haven't heard dk3nny's or gregsflat's list, but so far it's been a great idea. Props to everyone that participated.
rhb's list is excellent, you can tell the man knows his stuff. rb's is also very good but with a bit too many melodious choons with female vocalists. I guess me and Rag don't see eye to eye there. Rags also very good, even though, to answer your question, Gulag Orkestar didn't do much for me. I do love balkan and gypsy music, but the second part of the song just feels out of place. At least to me. Most of the rest is top notch.
Good work everyone!
Some feedback on Rag's mix...(listed in no particular order).
Bajofondo Tangoclub - Miles de Pasejeros
--Top-notch. Hands down, my fav track.
Black Mighty Orchestra - Ocean Beach
--Another excellent selection. Really enjoyed the pickup in tempo around halfway through.
Mark Farina - Dream Machine
--Nice, relaxing...great beat & vocals. Big favorite.
Beirut - Gulag Orkestar
--Again, I enjoyed this track. I've since checked out more Beruit. I think I like them, although they're really a departure from the style of music I normally listen to.
Jens Lekman - Pocketful of Money
I like this one a lot. I'm not sure if the deep vocal towards the end works for me, I might have added a nice female vocal just to piss off Palynka. Overall, a very nice choon though.
Troublemakers - Get Misunderstood
Since hearing about Troublemakers (I think rhb rec'd them), I downloaded the album. I do like the album (and this tune), but I wouldn't say this is my favorite track. Not terrible, just maybe not their best IMO.
Declan O Rourke - Gallileo
--I haven't really made up my mind on this one. On first listen, I was so-so on it. Second listen, I liked it more. I'm going to hang with this one a while. Maybe check out more of his stuff.
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
--I've just never been able to warm up to AF.
Darc Mind - Outside Looking In
--I liked this track, but it goes lower on my list of standouts. I liked the ones that I thought were very different from anything in my music collection (there were quite a few here).
Andrew Bird - Plasticities
--Definitely liked this tune, even though the chorus reminded me a little too much of Third Eye Blind. Great tune though. This one will stay in the rotation for a while.
Herbert - Something isn't right
--Not really my thing. I did really like the female vocal though. Wish there was more of it in this track
Attica Blues - Blueprint
--Liked this a lot. Reminded me a little of Portishead (Big fan of Portishead).

Very nice work with this.
Definitely lots of new stuff that I'd like to explore further.

Re: Beirut. You refer to "them". That whole album was written and recorded pretty much by 1 guy at home apparently, even though it sounds like 20 odd musicians.
His follow on album was indeed a project with multiple contributors.

Originally posted by rbmorrisA few of my choons, Marc Farina, Darc Mind and Black Mighty Orchestra came from compilation albums( Blue Cafe - 4 cds of more of the same http://murl.se/29070 and Hotel Costes Vol 8 (dk3nny put me onto the Hotel Costes series).
I'd be interested to know if any of the albums the tracks came off of are worth getting in their entirety.
I haven't tried out any of their individual albums as yet.
Beirut's album is VERY solid if you enjoy Gulag Orkestar. His follow on album is slightly weaker, although still a good listen. It's more French than Eastern European at times.
Andrew Bird's album is decent as well, although Plasticities is really the only track on it that'd make me stop what I'm doing and get involved with the music.
Jens Lekman has some good songs. At times he reminds me a little of Morrisey, but singing Neil Hanon's lyrics.
"They say you can't judge a man
Until you walked a mile in his shoes
Does that rule apply to a man who mostly walks barefoot
Of all my old hippie friends
There is one that I can't stand
So I stole his shoes
And walked across the land"
Get Misunderstood is pretty much the only song that I REALLY like so far by Troublemakers.
Bajofando Tango Club is also a good listen. Some of their choons are a lot like Gotan Project.
I really enjoyed Yonderboi for a while, but haven't listened to him much lately.

I haven't heard dk3nnys either yet, but have heard the rest once through. I'm going through them again tonight as I just snapped the aerial on my freeview box so am going TV-total for a while.
Originally posted by rhbJust to re-visit my earlier comments... I love the Jens Lekman track. Awesome.
So far I've only managed to listen to - and these once only,:
1. Beirut - Gulag Orkestar - nice 🙂 Kinda put me in the mood to watch on old western stand-off before the shooting starts.
2. Andrew Bird - Plasticities - really like this
3. Jens Lekman - Pocketful of Money - likewise, really nice voice and tune
4. Declan O Rourke - Gallileo - not so sure
5. ...[text shortened]... may be a while before I can comment on tunes properly - the above are gut first reactions.
re: Troublemakers - Black City & Awake are the 2 other really standout tracks on the album. I've a mix I did somewhere of Awake with the accapella for J5's What's Golden, then it goes off into a Dj Krush tune - Candle Light Chant... anyway I digress.
7. Mark Farina - Dream Machine - it's ok, not really my bag though
8. Slowtrain - In the Black of the night - Nice. Would be keen to hear more.
9. Darc Mind - Outside Looking In - Nice.
10. Black Mighty Orchestra - Ocean Beach - What film was this in? I thought briefly Sexy Beast - which would've been a connection into my list, but not on the soundtrack. I know it from somewhere and it's now bugging me.
11. Attica Blues - Blueprint - Nice.
12. Yonderboi - Pabadam - Nice.
13. The Knife - Heartbeats - Not so sure. Feels a bit '80's wedding for me. Prefer Jose.
14. Herbert - Something isn't right - Would love to hear more of these. One of those bands I've often seen the CD for and looked but not listened or bought.
15. Bajofondo Tangoclub - Miles de Pasejeros - Nice. Have you heard much Up, Bustle & Out? This track for me is UB&O meets Gotan Project meets Aphrodelics.
Good Stuff Rag's.
Rb Moz
01 Jaymay - Gray or Blue - Ok, I like the Chimes (Glok?) and the harmonies.
02 Zero dB - A Pompa Girou - I almost bought this album today of the back of yours and Palynkas tunes.
03 Skalpel - Long Distance Call - I've one track on the Zen-10yr Dvd - it's nice, this is nice too, doesn't quite grab me right in though. Polands finest export if I recall.
04 Breathe Me - Sia - Link #1 - I'd just picked up this on the Fourtet remix album, I prefer the remix though... 😉 Didn't rate Sia solo stuff first time around, might give it another shot though.
05 Tu M'intrigues - General Elektriks - It's ok, a bit too conceptual & over-busy - interesting for a listen, but not sticky.
06 Tamarindio - O Cote Soul Sounds & Adrian Quesada - Nice.
07 To Catch a Thief - Nathaniel Merriweather (Dan The Automator) - It's nice - have you heard Stroker Ace by Lovage on "Wanna buy a Monkey"? Same vocalist... dig the husky voice.
08 Part 4 - ( From Sixtoo, "Jackals & Vipers in Envy of Man" ) - Ninja = nice. Nice Piano.
09 Ankle Injuries - Fujiya & Miyagi - Nice.
10 Beverly's Potato Orchestra - Venetian Snares - like #5 - a bit busy, not sure I could listen too often.
11 Blueberry Boat - The Fiery Furnaces - Love it - really quirky story telling.
12 Creatures - Amon Tobin - Ninja = nice 🙂
13 Transfatty Acid - Lamb - first heard the K&D remix and have to say the original is ok, the remix awesome.
14 Success (Thievery Corporation Remix) - DJ Cam - I picked up this Dj Kicks album a while ago, at the same time i got the Daddy G one... I promise to give the TC one more time - Daddy G's really does rock though. Dj Cam is another I should've bought but never got around to. Red Snapper is also on that list if anyone can help me out 😉
15 Into Dust - Mazzy Star - Really nice voice - well produced track too. i'm a sucker for strings like these on this track too.
16 - i was thinking Dorfmeister right the way through - then checked the trackname on my mp3 and had a smug moment - nice track.
More good Stuff. Cheers.

Haven't really listened to that type of music since university, prefering the more mellow (as you can see from my mix). They're definately choons that would have excited me then, with great bass lines.
Have you heard much Up, Bustle & Out?
Loved Come as you are and Eleanor Rigby when you sent them to me in your mix tape.
Not surprisingly I'm really enjoying Four Tet's Sia remix and Laura Veirs (harmonious and female vocalist. Can't lose)
Just looked up Up, Bustle and Out, and they were connected with the music from Amores Perros, so that has me intrigued.

Palynka
01 - The Hives - Abra Cadaver - Eurgh! At least it's only 1.5 mins long.... semi kidding - I heard too much of this type of tune on sh - i - t nights out in Cov, and really avoid where possible. Musically, it's not that bad though.
02 - Prefuse 73 - The End of Biters - I still struggle with P73. Sorry. I really wish I got it, I don't though.
03 - Cujo - Popsicle - That's more like it! Nice. Sort of thing would've gone down well at the bar I played at.
04 - Suba - Sereia - as above - reminds me of Bebel Gilberto, and Wiki tells me that's cos she knew Suba, so I'm guessing it's her on vocal. (Sad story about Suba btw).
05 - Mão Morta - Tu Disseste - A bit darker, but not bad.
06 - Sofa Surfers - Elusive Scripts - Darker still! Been listening to SS since I "borrowed" an album back in Sept, it's alright.
07 - Soul Position - Inhale.mp3 - Nice! Entertaining lyrics.
08 - Zero dB - Know What Im Sayin - see Zdb comment on RBMoz's list.
09 - Amon Tobin - The Lighthouse - ninja = nice
10 - Four Tet - Everything Is Alright - another link - his remix of Sia is good, and I almost used a JayDee remix of "as serious as your life gets" but it just didn't fit. Four Tet has produced some great and some awful stuff.
11 - DJ Krush and Toshinori Kondo - Ha-Doh - Love this album, very nice.
12 - RJD2 - Good Times Roll Pt.2 - nice tune. feel good party tune.
13 - Lemon Jelly - '64 aka Go - ok, but a bit like P73 (although to a lesser extent) I've never really been able to fully get into LJ.
Another good mix.
I think when the dust settles I'll take the best tunes from each and make the ultimate new playlist... that'll then be on my mp3 player for some time to come, and if i can keep it to less than 80 mins it'll find a place in the car too.
Still got gregs and dk3nnys to listen to, so more to come in time.
Read a comment about maybe carrying this on with themed playlists - I think that'd be awesome. Max 15 tracks on keyword - e.g. Love - be really keen to see what folk can come up with.
I'm glad I'm without TV for now as It'll help me spend more time with music. Thanks again to Rag for starting this thread, thus making it happen.
(edit - stupid less than sign)

I was sure I hadn't used those covers on a previous mix tape... oh well - should've checked back properly.
Edit - Palynka - are you able to tell me what the song Maga is about? I think Go Lem are from your part of the world...
