My own idea of genius is anyone whose brain works differently to the rest of us - whether it be a creative or purely intellectual difference.

I ...[text shortened]... guarantee his brain doesn't work like a regular person's when he's studying a position. 😕
Exactly my point, only with less bolloxology. IQ tests don't tell you if you're a genius or not, they just tell you if you're good at IQ tests (as someone (apologies to that someone for forgetting which someone you are) has already mentioned.)

I just ran across a job application from some guy who actually put on his resume that he worked for a MENSA publication.

Why do people who are really, really smart have to make sure everyone else knows it?

It's like saying "don't take me at face value, because beneath all that I'm really worth esteeming."

or, more forcefully,

"Don't fire me/beat me up/ridicule me/or give me the treatment that my behavior would merit in any other person, because I'm an exception, thanks to my big brain."

Whatever. Learn to live.

Of course, the guy never said what he did for that publication -- maybe he was the custodian.

Exactly,
and why do sportsmen and women play infront of such big crowds?
and why do directors, actors, producers, e.t.c put their names in the credits of movies?
and why do writers put their names on their books that they published?
and why do peope that do extra-ordinary things announce it to the Guiness book of records?
and why do woman with enormous melons wear tight clothes and show them off?

BECAUSE IT'S A TALENT YOU STUPID S.O.B!!!!!
Just like people with other talents not everybody is smart.

Get it right -- it's stupied S.O.B., per tradition here.

The difference is that people who win sporting events are doing something observable, measurable, and something that can be judged (e.g., first across the finish line, highest jump, most beers quaffed).

Being smart is not something that is actively apparent, like running fast. You can't really look at someone across the room and determine whether or not he's a genius.

Give it the cocktail party test: you walk up to someone at a party and you say, "hey, what do you do?" The person can say "I'm a professional race car driver," or "I write fantasy novels," or "I'm a chemist. I work on polymers used in tire manufacturing." That all sounds fine. On the other hand, "Me? I'm very smart" sounds ridiculous.

It means you score a lot higher than average on IQ tests.

If that does anything to your self esteem is up to you to decide.

You cannot see that someone is a race car driver or a fast runner by just looking at them either.

I said being smart is a talent, not a profession.
If someone asks a runner what he/she does, that person does not say "I run fast";
or a car racer - "I drive fast";
similarly a smart person will not say "I am smart" when asked their profession.

they don't. one would have to be pretty dumb if he thought some statistical number would make any difference. you either deliver ingenious stuff, or you don't. pretty simple.

you could take any cognitive (or other) property, say, 'donald duckness'. device a test to measure it, scale the result for EX = 100 and SD = 15 and bang, you have similar system for ranking people, the donald duckness quotient D.D.Q.

the highest scoring 2% of people in the D.D.Q. test can then start an organization for the elite duckies, the ANAS. a highly revered group of exceptionally donald duck -like people. wupee. three quacks for that!
