B Trezeguet would still have taken a penalty and regardless of Zidane scoring or not, it only took one miss as Italy scored all 5. How could ZZ have affected that?
Er...Italy only won 5-3 on penalties because there was no point in France taking their fifth penalty...did you actually watch the match?

So Zidane takes France's last penalty and scores and Italy win 5 - 4.

Trezeguet would have taken a penalty anyway. Abidal wouldn't.

So no outcome change.

Ok.

Pirlo scores.

Zidane scores.

Del Piero scores.

Wiltord scores.

Materazzi scores.

Trezegeut misses.

De Rossi scores.

Abidal scores.

Grosso scores and Italy wins 5 -3.

No change in outcome.

You're forgetting the psychological effect of Zidane scoring...

Obviously you can't be totally sure that the PKs would have gone the same way if Zidane had stayed on the field. Maybe Trezeguet was depressed about the red card and that's why he missed. On the other hand maybe Wiltord or somebody was so angry about the red card that it made him shoot better. Who knows?

There's just no point trying to speculate on what would have happened in the absence of the red card-- all we can say is that there is no evidence to indicate that Zidane's presence would have made a difference.

I'd like to point out that there is no reliable independent version of Materazzi's comments right now. We don't know what we said, and we may never. Let's hear what Zidane has to say on the matter.

Ok.

In the infinite realm of possibility, Zidane could've cost France the World Cup.

Aww, it would've been nice if the last image was the infamous headbutt!

Actually, the final word that triggered the head-butt was "vaffanculo". It's quite clear actually if you see it from the front. It's funny that he lost it after such a last common insult.
