You want a fact? How about the fact that the Mamlukes are no longer in control of ANY of their starting land? NOR is there any "chain" of provinces on the way to where they are, belonging to them. Is that a good enough fact for you?
I still don't think it's the same situation as the Poles, but that's a matter of opinion.
Originally posted by SuzianneHow does that make me an idiot? All you're saying is that Hungary risks getting screwed either way. Idiot. Breaking the alliance now would hand the game to no1 on a silver platter...
How's the view from up on that bandwagon?
In fact, you've just strengthened no1's view that Bavaria's allies are playing badly. Congratulations. You've made an excellent witness for the prosecution.
Besides, the issue of whether the alliance should be broken is COMPLETELY different from the question of whether it was wise to make in the first place. It's not unlike the real-life problems of the US in Iraq. Whether the invasion was smart (or lawful) is a totally different question from whether the troops should be pulled out, and when.
Perhaps we can all be a bit more constructive; I've been thinking how I can redo the Power Ratings to make them more accurate. Right now it's based on 5 categories with a realm's ranking in each multiplied by a certain factor for each as follows:
Province Gold Value: 5
Land Combat Strength: 4
Land Hit Points: 3
Naval Combat Strength: 2
Naval Hit Points: 1
Thus a country ranked #1 in Province Gold Value would get 115 points (23 [the number of realms]x 5).
First, I've been thinking maybe I should just give a certain number of points for each unit in each category rather than using an ordinal ranking. Second, I've been thinking I should equalize my treatment of CS and HP. Third, I've been thinking perhaps I should make some adjustment for annexed v. unannexed provinces.
If anybody wants to give any thoughts, please feel free. Specific suggestions would be appreciated.

Uhhhh, has someone hit you with a baseball bat?
I KNOW he had no idea you would do that... I doubt anyone did... my point (which no1 deftly avoided by talking about what he didn't know, something completely unrelated to my point) is that whether he knew or not does not matter in the least, and has absolutely no bearing on the fact that he used and is co ...[text shortened]... you... so I suppose he was honest by declaring war on you? Sorry, I missed something there...
There is no need to write such blatant rubbish in a rude tone. As you saw from what l wrote, there were no insults or foul language at all. Yes you did miss something; but obviously it is too late....
Originally posted by nook7I apologize for the rude tone, but it stems from the fact that obviously you buy into no1's misdirection.

And as for what I missed, yeah, I missed the lies told to me by those who said they would help me.
What I detest most of all is having my hopes built up by smooth-talking shysters and then watch them pull the rug out from under me. I'd much rather be beaten to death while I'm down than to have people help me, only to starve me to death. I told you both as much. But you went on with your plan to screw me anyways. Thanks.
It's not you I blame so much as Aragon. I spent several long PMs explaining to him that I'm not going to be strung along only to be killed off at his leisure. He said he understood my position and assured me this wouldn't happen. Well, I guess I was right after all, and shame on me for being fooled twice. Be assured it won't happen again.
Well, forget it. I'm done talking. Time to go out like a woman, instead of like a sniveling man, being kept alive artificially in a permanent vegetative state by those claiming to "help" me.

Ideas for no1's equation;
Giving cavalry, fast cavalry, and fast ships movement bonuses; points for the units with moves of 3 and 4. It's clear the Horde's speed helps a ton; look how Rob's doing. Plus they're listed as the #1 most common victorious nation on the website; the Teutons, who have equivalent cavalry, are #2 I think. If he'd been given extra points for movement ability from the beginning we'd maybe have predicted who would be strong in the long run.
Thanks for the Power Ratings so far. They are very enjoyable.

Originally posted by no1marauderAs much as I love to crunch numbers, this is still a game where it is assumed that each realm is out to win. The victory conditions are only concerned with total gold value of provinces held. Although the other factors you have currently in your ranking system are indicative of how likely a realm is to be able to take provinces, it all still comes back to provinces and their gold value.

What I would like to see but do not have the inclination to do, would be the rankings of land power and sea power listed separately. I played in one game where a player provided those lists and I found it very helpful.
Seriously, I appreciate the work you've put into this formula and appreciate the faithfulness you've shown in getting it out to us each week, but I would much rather just see the raw data broken down by category.
Originally posted by buffalobillGold earnings are only an indicator of what a realm could spend on the things (ships, troops, other annexations, etc.) that realms use to gain provinces. I would love to see this listed as a separate item, too, but factoring it in to some formula would be more work for very little benefit, I imagine.
They're worthwhile. I agree that gold earnings are worth more than gold holdings.
Also, commanders have an effect on troop performance. Factoring that in would be a real problem.
A fascinating story was featured on The Science Channel last night, building a Roman catapault of c. 70 AD.
An engineer, a materials expert, and a Roman weapons historian teamed up to try to build a siege weapon that could heave a 26kg ball. The ball itself was remarkable, as it was carved from a solid block of marble by a craftswoman. They wanted to match the Romans' capabilities, which was a heave of about 120 meters.
In the end, the machine was immense! It took quite a crew working for 3 months to put it together, using instructions from the Roman builders' plans. Huge trees were cut for materials. I'm thinking it stood about 28' high, 12' wide. What a terrifying site outside your city gates! One of the greatest difficulties they had to overcome was how to get the 50-pound projectile away cleanly.
The most intriguing part of the whole process was this: they needed to mimic the effect of the spring tensioners that the Romans used. How did the Romans gain the awesome power of the siege weapon in 70 AD? They used animal sinew, braided animal sinew. Incredible elasticity when the fibrous sinew is dried, pounded, separated, soaked, braided. The modern weapons people even tried their hand at producing the sinew, but of course due to impracticality they knew they were not going to use it on a large scale. They tested many materials and settled on one type of braided rope. They had a problem with the huge washers that had to turn as tension was taken up, and eventually had to switch from steel washers to bronze (about 18" dia.). Worked like a charm.
There was no gaurantee the behemoth would would work at all, and it was a very dangerous propostion building the catapault in the first place. As the crew stated, the Romans had two centuries tio perfect the art, and if a Legionaire or two was killed in the process, another would step up to take their place.
The big day came for launch. They placed a target 123 meters away, with 10 meter markers in between to judge distance. They held their breath as the first shot was fired. Wow! That bad hunk of marble flew 60 meters, not bad for a first attempt of a siege weapon not seen for centuries. They decided to try one more time, even though the catapault had shown cracking in some of the timbers from the strain of the process. Second shot went 90 meters! It's very cool seeing a shot that large flying headlong toward its target. They were all ecstactic with the result.
Excellent show.
I want to build one.

Princess, you have lost it.
About 200 pages ago, you started in on no1, saying that he doesn't understand diplomacy, that he needed other realms if he was going to win and that his abrasiveness would lead to his undoing. Your point back then had some merit, of course.
So, no1 turned his venom on you. Well, some of it, as he tends to spread it around a bit, but you seemed to be a special target of his.
Now, 200 some pages later, you have become what you have despised. You have become the yin to his yang, and in so doing, you have lost.
Whereas no1 has been consistently abrasive and caustic, your descent into madness has been a sad and slow process. You have become a rabid animal, lashing out at any and all. And you're addicted to it, too, as evidenced by your several remarks about how THIS will be your last response... yet you still keep coming back a bit meaner and a bit less coherent each time.
You're not going out as a real woman, as you claim. You're going out like a wounded and maddened beast. The end of the movie is coming, Ol' Yeller.
I'm not trying to excuse no1 in any sense. I do not respect much of what he says or how he says it. But you knew he was this way when you got started down this path and he still is what he is. It's just that you are what he is, too, now.
