D M Y is a logical sequence from smallest to largest.
Y M D is a logical sequence from largest to smallest, and also the one that works best in ordering lists.

Either is acceptable.
M D, Y is as antiquated as the imperial system and deserves to be consigned to the dustbin of history along with stupid paper sizes.
