Mp3 sharing throughout the house

Mp3 sharing throughout the house

I'm in the process of designing a home, and would like to be able to play my mp3s throughout the house. So some kind of remote system, where I could browse my mp3s, chose which rooms to play the music in.

Does anybody have any experience of this, or can anybody recommend hardware/software systems for achieving this?

Cheers,

D

I don't, but that's a wicked idea.

I have a complete sonos setup.

They are bit pricey, BUT they are without a doubt the sweetest all-house-encompassing music system. I've got them outside and in all the rooms. They create a wireless-mesh network to extend range. I can play the same song in every room, different songs in different rooms, combinations of that. You can control any of the units via desktop software or a wireless remote.

It's quite beautiful.

There are tonnes.

The best ones have touch screen displays that you install around the house so you don't always have to go back to one central room where your stereo is to change the music.

Just a question of how much $$ you want to spend.

I just found that one after posting. It's a little pricey, but looks the mutt's.

Do you have the ones with the built in amp or without?

That sounds cool. 🙂

May I ask how energy efficient you plan on making your home?
I know a little about it and might be able to help, I'd be willing to do a little research for you if you'd like.
I made a thread about energy efficiency a while back too. 🙂

Essentially this is a great oppurtunity for you to to do this now, you don't have comprimise your vision of what you want, but there are lots of little things you can do.
It would save you a LOT in the long run.

Hope I can help.

😀

edit: best of look with the mp3 thing. 🙂

I have 1 with the builtin amp. (Unfortunately you have to have 1 of the ZP100's) and I have 4 of the ZP80's (without the amp), plugged into external speakers with an external amp.

I now have all my music on a single network share, but at one time the music library it had read from 3 different network shares.

It is pricey, but it is also awesome. They have an extensive user forum on their site, lots of good info in there.

50 watts sounds kind of wimpy. My current stereo is 1000 Watt PMPA. Am I confusing figures here? Does the 50 watt result in tinny sounding music.

Some alternative systems that don't seem as perfectly engineered as the Sonos system...

You've got me. I am no audiophile and dont have the best of hearing. Sounds good to me, but I mainly play hippie music on it. I know almost nothing about the "audio" technology, what got me was the wireless/functionality of the system.

I'd ask/look here: http://forums.sonos.com/

I think you mean PMPO, http://cbll.net/articles/pmpo

The aim is to design a passive solar house.

The house is essentially single room deep, with all the major usage rooms facing to the south. Windows will be maximised to the South, and minimised to the North, with possibly woodchip powered heater/boiler feeding underfloor heating. I am introducing Trombe walls internally to act increase the thermal mass of the Timber framed house. The downstairs is also being designed with dark tiles/stone to absorb more of the solar radiation for later release. Deciduous planting will be used for both windbreaking and for absorbing/blocking the heat of the summer sun, while allowing the lower angled winter sun to pass through the branches.

Solar power will be used for both water heating and electricity generation. I will also have a small wind turbine with a bank of batteries. The aim would be to go off grid in a couple of years, possibly through the addition of more photovoltaic panels and possibly a biodiesel generator. Obviously, appliances will be chosen for their low energy consumption.

I will be installing a rainwater harvesting system, which will look after all my water requirements. I won't need a seperate greywater plumbing system installed as the system I have chosen purifies the water on demand by passing ozone (03, 2000 times more purifying than chlorine) through it.

Insulation will be done to passive house standards, the house will be "airtight" and a mechanical heat recovery system will be employed.

The one thing I haven't been able to reach a decision on is the type of insulation (or possibly outsulation) and the external layer (concrete, paroc or what). I'm also not sure what to get to top up the solar heated water and for space heating. I'm leaning towards the woodchip boiler, ATM.

Currently, I'm looking into home automation... ie: systems to turn on/off lights according to occupancy for certain rooms, to easily turn off all standby appliances, and to open the curtains in the main living room (whole wall windows) at dawn to allow the passive house design to start "working" before people are up (Curtains act as insulation at night, but prevent a passive house from working when it is bright). Just playing around with these ideas at the moment, but will defo implement a few of the more cost effective ideas.

Thanks, how would I go about comparing like for like, and as cadwah pointed out, I did indeed mean PMPO.

Sort of off the main point, but here's a cool link for energy efficient - http://tinyurl.com/2udbee
