Top three authors would be:

Robert Rankin: Brilliant off the wall humour. Unlike anything else ever written and absolutely hilarious.

Terry Pratchett: Brilliant characters, well thought out plots and very good analogies between his Discworld and the real world.

Iain Banks: Simply the best author ever to have lived. Also writes SF as Iain M Banks. Superbly written, incredibly thought provoking stuff. Read some.

Favourite novel ever, almost impossible to say. Too many good ones, but it would probably be something by Banks, or possibly Dune by Frank Herbert.

As leader of the DUNE clan .. its pretty obvious. All time best science fiction novel by all time best sci-fi writer Frank Herbert.

But what about Catch 22 by Joseph Heller, or Slaughterhouse five by Kurt Vonnegut. And I cann't leave Jerzy Kosinski's The painted bird out of it ...

And I could go on and on ....

Huge book junkie here πŸ™‚

Favorite author- Stephen King. The Dark Tower series are my favorite books. Also love the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, and Dean Koontz.

I recently started reading the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, and am happy with it so far. I've just read the first book, waiting to get my hands on the second.

I just finished my introduction to Isaac Asimov, and though I don't usually get into the sci fi, humans on other planets thing, he was very good and I never lost interest. I read The Empire Novels.

Now I am on to my introduction to Lovecraft. I know I will love him and don't really know why I haven't read him in the past!

Can someone please tell me which is the best out of these three?
Stephen King's Cujo, Christine, or Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jeckll and Mr. Hyde?πŸ™‚

Great List here.

I would agree with many already listed: Irving, Asimov, Iain M. Banks, Tolkien. And would like to add a couple more.

Gabriel Garcia Marques: if you want a book to envelope you and transport you to South America he's the author for you. His books remain in your brain for the rest of your life.

Roger Zelazny: So you've read Tolkien, great, now every Fantasy novel seems to be ripping off his plot right? But none measure up. Well Zelazny has one of the most original plot lines ever in his "Amber Chronicles". Read it, you will quickly put it at the top of your list.

And one more.

Michael Moorcock: Again one of the few original story lines in Fantasy. You can try and read his entire collection but truly the best is his Elric of Melnibone series.
