i'm contemplating forking out about £10-£20 on an online game that is,
a) decent
b) not guildwars and/or equivalent. i already play progress quest and it is sufficient.
i would play counter strike, but i'm not sure how many people actually play that any more-would it be worth it? and do you have to but half-life first? i never understood how to get hold of that game, never mind how to play it...
also, my computer is pretty low-spec so nothing to modern.
so any ideas?

Or maybe you should save the money towards a better spec PC.

They are just after sells. You might try Amazon and MMORPG. I have not found a good onling game yet. All I have looked at and or played were short of my expectations. All I asked for was a story a quest some adventure and good game play.

do you need half life first to play it? and do people still play it? and isn't there only 2 levels...?

Save your money and buy a better computer.
Prepare for Crysis.
Crysis will usher in a new era in gaming, those of you who are not ready for the paradigm shift will spend the rest of your lives lying to your children with claims of 'I was there when the gaming revolution began' and 'Crysis changed the world, I was part of those first few strange days of wonder and trepidation'.
Don't be a liar, be a player.
