to OP:
I really don't know of anyone who was a jerk on a web site who didn't turn out to be one in real life. They may hide it from some people who don't have as much contact with them as we tend to have here. For some people it's just a game, though, or the absence of fear. What makes you call someon ...[text shortened]... ad of just disagreeing with him or ignoring him? Whatever that is -- there's your answer.
See, there is a difference. Defense of self against an attack is my nature. I would do it face to face as well. When someone is acting like a I call them on it. Real life, online, matters not. Give me *&%! and I will give it back.

you don't seem to know me very well, do you?

but now that you've been doing the anonymous jerk thing for a couple of posts, maybe you can tell us what compelled you do it? the lack of physical threat? I can assure you I wouldn't succumb to such moral lows in real life either, nor would I have trouble to call you a whiney sissy to your face for starting a thread to whine about people you don't know nor specify.

You do realise that posting a thread about online integrity, then doing the "handbags at 10 paces" thing.........well it's hella funny , that's for sure.

Don't you mean: "I've learned to never agree with a demented woman." ? πŸ˜‰ Nobody's listening but you and me....

Because they are anonymous and untouchable.

Obviously, also people feel that the normal rules of ettiquette do not aply online, or even here at RHP in some cases: take use MMIKA. Having asked for a rapid game, he got one, but we were unable to finish before I went on vacation to a cabin in the high mountains in Norway, where there is obviously no internet. With no warning, he claimed the win.

If someone steals from me in real life, they get a reaction, and I consider that this prick stole ratings points. It would have cost him nothing to have waited until I got home, as did the other 8 / 9 people I was playing with.

I hereby warn people against playing with MMIKA - his rating is based on stolen games and points. Game 2920154

So in your mind, you're not acting a jerk in this thread? I guess that's your answer... some people just lack the objectivity to realise that they're jerks.

I guess a related question is why do online people cheat so much at games like chess, Lords of Conquest, etc.

That timeout was your fault. Why take a fast game when you knew you were going away?

Why is it that internet ambiguity and anonymity make people feel like they can be bungholes and jerks and everything else? What is it about it that bring out this dark side in people? What is it that makes manners and decorum and just plain common decency fade to nothingness when someone gets behind a keyboard?

I know it happens. I know anonymity and ...[text shortened]... man just that dark at their core?

Just something I have been pondering of late. Any thoughts?
I think that it is stupid that people think that they can become this big person when they're online, but in real life are just as pathetic as the person they are trying to hide with this image.
I behave in the same way online as I do in real life as I believe that there isn't any point in pretending to be someone you're not.
Good thoughts KW πŸ™‚
