I think all the really big scores are using laser rockets with a massive chain behind them, the rockets themselve will fire lasers with equal power to your chain, if you upgrade the rocket tower enough it will deploy rockets without creeps being on the screen meaning you have a number of rockets circling each with the same firepower as your chain,
Here is a screen shot from halfway through one of my better efforts, as you can see this has a chain of 108 turrets firing into a rocket tower with a few nuke turrets thrown in for good measure. The tazer towers at the start of the run slow the creeps.
