Or any other computer savey person. I would like to know how I can remove a layer of folders in Windows XP. Somthing got messed up when I moved some music around and now some my music path goes through an extra folder. I want to remove the top folders in the destination path. Can this be done without transfering the files I want out?

You should be able to copy the top folder that you want to the directory you want it in, then delete the old top folder along with everything under it.

example, if you have three folders and you just want the last two -

c:\3 > 2 > 1 > files

copy folder 2 with all its contents and paste it to c:\

then delete folder 3 with all its contents.

Disclaimer - I may still be thinking in DOS 6.22

Are talking about copying 1 because its about 30gigs and it took about a day and a half to get in there. Thats why I want to try to work it backwards.

If I had these folders...

C:/One/Two/Three/Four

I would take folders Two/Three/Four and move them up to C:

Next I would delete the empty folder C:/One

But now, you might need to teach your program where the files have gone, since it may still be looking in folder C:/One for the files.

It took a day and a half to get there from where? Same Harddrive?

I think copy takes longer than move... but can't say I've ever moved 30 Gigs.

That's pretty much what I meant... wrong words.

It shouldn't take that long to copy or move because its already there. The actual transfer of data doesn't happen, the OS just points to it differently...

Nevermind, different drive that you're moving them to? Or just moving them on that drive?

Edit(s) - stupid crap night-time typing...

I will be keeping them all on the same drive(F🙂. If I get what your saying, is that when I move the files ,windows should pick up that I am really just changing the address.

That is what took so long, is my guess.

Still not sure if copy is slower than move. I would think it is since it would need to check file one file one file 2 file 2 file 3 file 3 etc. to verify it's going right.

I just moved 23 Gigs the way I described and it went instantly.

No, you're right about copy vs. move. I just meant that if the actual files aren't being transferred it shouldn't be a significant amount of time in either case.

OK somthing is going terribly wrong here. I tried to do the move to and opened the folde where I wanted them to go and it started moving them off the F: drinve back to the C: drive!!!! Arggggggggg!
*Edit* I tried the move using the optin on the side panel and now it seems to be working. But I couldn't send it directly to where I wanted it. Oh well,I can do it in stages as long as it gets done.
Thanks to both you guys. If I could rename the thread for you I would.

Uh, yeah... I'm not touching that one on accounta it sounds like you may have opened a wrong folder. Again, I could be wrong and it might have something to do with it being an external drive (never used one) instead.
