"To bring owls to Athens" is an old saying which stands for a redundant activity. In Ancient Greece, they had silver coins bearing the picture of an owl. Athens was a rich city, so they had a lot of "owls".

the reason owls were a symbol in athens is that the owl was the symbol of wisdom ...that is why they have an 8 foot owl at the annual bohemian club
