I'm sure you handled those questions well!

We went to our in-laws and they watch the Fox News Channel constantly. On the drive home, my Daughter who was 9 at the time asked me why the dirty Mexicans were trying to sneak into our country.

Just part of trying to be a good parent, right?

The only question that I might have for you is why you think this would upset me in any way?
You want to have a word with your in-laws about their views.

I don't think anyone on Fox News would use the expression "dirty Mexicans".

Fox News is one of the most blatantly biased, racist, and bigoted networks on the TV here in the states.

That's cute. I think you ment, "I don't think anyone on cox newb would use the expression 'dirty mexicants' ON THE AIR".

On the air, they'd rather just spread lies until someone pins them on it, but that's a totally liberal view not worth mentioning.

Bill O'Reilley and Ann Coulter may be the most evil people in the country.

That may be so. But I doubt you'd get anyone using the expression "dirty Mexicans".

I wouldn't put it past them.

It's much more likely that your in-laws said it. Or maybe it's something they heard at home.

What if President Fox fell in a mud puddle?

Are you familiar with the Network in question?

Hah, not only that, but you have to be pretty naive if you think people in general don't use racial slurs.

Noodles, go to a family with children and tell them you would like to teach their children about the use of the words "f" and "s", but not in a harmful fashion.

Film it for me, I could use the laugh.
Well, I tried it today. Sorry, I couldn't film it, but since it was in Norwegian (except for the word starting with f), you wouldn't have understood it anyway. Of course, as I am not a teacher I couldn't do it entirely for real, I had to use the "imagine I were your child's teacher" approach, which may make it a little less realistic. Anyway, I asked two of my colleagues (special education teachers), one of whom has two grown-up children and one of whom has two school-age children how they would react if I, as their child's teacher (the child still being a child, of course) told them that I wanted to explain to the child what the f word means. They thought that was fine when I heard the child use the word or the child asked (if the child wouldn't use it, I wouldn't see a reason to explain it either). One of them actually went further than me (although after our discussion I think I have changed my opinion about that, too), she said she wouldn't have any problem explaining the meaning to a 4 y.o. either, of course without going into a lot of detail, just saying something like "it's a word people use for what people do when they make children". The other one said she would say something along the lines that it's a word which is meant to be nasty and insulting, although the original meaning was something very nice. I guess you'd better not move to Norway.

The colleague with two grown-up children also told two episodes from when her daughter was in kindergarten and had picked up "dirty" words. One time she came home and went to her 1 y.o. brother and said "hestkuk, hestkuk, hestkuk, hestkuk", a word which is used as a swear word and which originally means the male sex organ of a horse. She (the mother) asked whether she (her daughter) knew what that meant, and the daughter said no. So the mother explained that some people call the Penis of a horse "hestkuk", and asked her whether that was something nice to call her brother. Her daughter felt very embarrassed about having called her brother this, and she never used the word again. Another time she had learned a sentence which meant approximately "you f... a cow", and again used it on her brother. The mother asked if she knew what f... means, and she didn't, so she explained that it meant to make children, and her brother couldn't make children with a cow, could he? Again, her daughter thought it was very embarrassing and didn't use it again. Now as an adult she's still someone who almost never swears. I doubt "Don't you ever use that word again!" would have been as effective.

So we had a long intelligent discussion about swear words today. I guess we are all eejits.
